Industrial production recorded negative results in 6 of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE in September, from August, adding to the negative result (-0.4%) of national industry. The main drops were observed in Paraná (-6.9%), Bahia (-4.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (-4.3%). Pará (-1.4%) São Paulo (-0.4%) and Northeast Region (-0.1%) also recorded negative results. The data come from the Regional Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM), released today (11).
The survey analyst, Bernardo Almeida, explains that regional industry has followed the movement of national industry, making up for the part of the advance observed in August in several areas. “Industry in Paraná, the main negative influence, shrank, after 5.4%, eliminating the increase observed last August. Electrical machinery and apparatus contributed to this drop. It is worth mentioning that this is the highest rate in Paraná since October 2022 (-12.4).”
Rio de Janeiro now is in the second position in terms of negative influence, with a drop of 4.3% a cumulative loss of 6.2% in two consecutive months with reduction of output. The main contributions came from the mining and quarrying and petroleum products sectors.
The industry of São Paulo, a place that holds the biggest industrial concentration (approximately 33%), dropped 0.4% this month, under the influence, mainly, of the mining n quarrying and petroleum products sectors. According to Bernardo Almeida, this result comes after two months of positive results, marked by a cumulative increase of 1.5%. “Even so, with the September rate, industry in the state of São Paulo is 0.1% below the pre-pandemic level and 21.7% below its highest level, reached in March 2011,” the analyst explains.
On the other hand, Amazonas (9.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.8%) and Espírito Santo (4.6% recorded the most significant increases this month. Rio Grande do Sul is the main positive influence, and accounted for the third increase rate and a cumulative increase of 10.7% in the period. The sectors of food products and machinery and equipment contributed to this positive movement of industry in Rio Grande do Sul.
In the second position in terms of positive influence and the first position in Absolute terms, the industry of Amazonas grew 9.0%, the highest rate since February 2024, when it recorded an increase of 9.9%. “The result of September comes after two months with negative results, when there was a cumulative loss of 8.3%. For September, the sectors of manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products and beverages accounted the most for the positive behavior of Amazonas,” Bernardo analyzed.
Indústria avança em 14 dos 18 locais pesquisados na comparação com setembro de 2024
Against September 2024, the industrial sector advanced 2.0% in September 2025, with positive results in 14 of the 18 areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning that September 2025 had one business day more (22) than September 2024 (21).
In Espírito Santo, crude oil, natural gas and iron ore pellets contributed to the increase in mining and quarrying industry, the main influence on the positive results of the state. In Rio Grande do Norte, the increase was driven by manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories, coke, petroleum products and biofuels and food products. Rio Grande do Sul benefited from the increases in food products, machinery and equipment, tobacco products and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies.
Amazonas (8.4%), Ceará (4.7%), Pernambuco (4.6%), Goiás (4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%), Pará (4.1%), Santa Catarina (3.6%), Northeast Region (2.8%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (2.8%) also recorded higher positive rates in relation to the national average (2.0%), whereas Bahia (1.8%) and Minas Gerais (0.7%) completed the group of areas with increase in output considering the Monthly index of September 2025. On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-13.6%), Maranhão (-6.1%), Paraná (-1.8%) and São Paulo (-0,3%) recorded other negative results in the monthly index of September 2025.
More about the survey
Since the 1970s, the Regional PIM has produced short-term indicators on the behavior of real output in the mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. It provides monthly indices for 17 Federation Units whose share is at least 0.5% of the total value of manufacturing, and for the Northeast as a whole: Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and Northeast Region.
The survey results are also available on Sidra, the IBGE database. The next Regional PIM release is scheduled for December 9.
