In September, industry shrinks in 6 of the 15 areas surveyed

With a change of -0.4% in industry output in September 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, 6 of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE also recorded negative results. Paraná (-6;9%), Bahia (-4.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (-4.3%) recorded the main drops, followed by Pará (-1.4%), São Paulo (-0.4%) and Northeast Region (-0.1%). The main positive results were found in Amazonas (9.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.8%) and Espírito Santo (4.6%), followed by Ceará (2.9%), Pernambuco (2.8%), Santa Catarina (1.5%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), Mato Grosso (0.7%) and Goiás (0.6%).

The quarterly moving average recorded a positive change of 0.1% in the quarter ending September 2025. Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%), Espírito Santo (2.6%) and Goiás (1.1%) recorded the biggest increases. On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%), Paraná (-1.5%) and Bahia (-0.9%) accounted for the main drops.

From September 2024, the industrial sector increased by 2.0%, with positive results in 14 of the 18 areas surveyed. Espírito Santo (19.2%), Rio Grande do Norte (19.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (10.6%) recorded the main increases.

The national output of industry recorded a negative change from the previous month, 0.4% against the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, with negative rates in 6 of the 15 areas surveyed. Paraná (-6.9%), Bahia (-4.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (-4.3%) accounted for the main drops, with the first two decreasing again, after increases of 5.4% and 4.9%, respectively, in the previous month; and the last one recording a cumulative drop of 6.2% in two consecutive months of decrease in output. Pará (-1.4%) also had a negative result below the national average (-0.4%), whereas São Paulo (-0.4%) and the Northeast Region (-0.1%) completed the group of areas with output increase in September 2025.

On the other hand, Amazonas (9.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.8%) and Espírito Santo (4.6%) recorded the main increases in the month, with the first one eliminating the cumulative loss of July-August 2025 (8.3%); and the last two locations in their third consecutive month followed by increases in production, a period marked by cumulative advances of 10.7% and 7.9%, respectively. Ceará (2.9%), Pernambuco (2.8%), Santa Catarina (1.5%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), Mato Grosso (0.7%) and Goiás (0.6%) also recorded positive results in September 2025.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall recorded a positive changes of 0.1% in the quarter ended September 2025 against the level in the previous month, after increases in August 2025 (0.2%), with interruption of two consecutive months of decrease: July (-0.2%) and June (-0.4%). In this same comparison, 9 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates this month, among which Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%), Espírito Santo (2.6%) and Goiás (1.1%) stand out. On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%), Paraná (-1.5%) and Bahia (-0.9%) recorded the main drops.

Against September 2024, the industrial sector advanced 2.0% in September 2025, with positive results in 14 of the 18 areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning that September 2025 had one business day more (22) than the same month a year ago (21). Espírito Santo (19.2%), Rio Grande do Norte (19.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (10.6%) recorded two-digit increases this month, mainly due to the positive performance of the sectors of mining and quarrying industry, in the first location; manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories, coke, petroleum products and biofuels and food products, in the second; and food products, Machinery and equipment, tobacco products and motor vehicles trailers and bodies, in the last one.

Amazonas (8.4%), Ceará (4.7%), Pernambuco (4.6%), Goiás (4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%), Pará (4.1%), Santa Catarina (3.6%), Northeast Region (2.8%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (2.8%) also recorded higher positive rates in relation to the national average (2.0%), whereas Bahia (1.8%) and Minas Gerais (0.7%) completed the group of areas with increase in output considering the Monthly index of September 2025. On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-13.6%) accounted for the highest increase in the month, mainly due to coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol). Maranhão (-6.1%), Paraná (-1.8%) and São Paulo (-0,3%) recorded other negative results in the monthly index of September 2025.

The comparisons between the results of the second and third quarters of 2025, both against the same periods a year ago, show that 9 of the 18 areas surveyed recorded loss of dynamism, thus following the movement observed in the national total, which changed from 0.6% to 0.5%. Pará (from 8.5% to 1.8%), Minas Gerais (from 3.2% to -1.5%), Mato Grosso (from -8.9% to -13.6%), Amazonas (from 4.1% to -0.6%), Maranhão (from -2.4% to -6.5%) and Paraná (from 3.4% to 0.2%) accounted for the main decreases, whereas Rio Grande do Norte (from -17.1% to -1.1%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from -6.0% to 1.2%), Espírito Santo (from 11.8% to 16.0%), São Paulo (from -4.9% to -1.4%), Bahia (from -1.6% to 1.7%) and Pernambuco (from -0.2% to 2.2%) recorded the main crops between both periods.

As for the cumulative index in the year, there was an increase of 1.0%, with positive results in 10 of the 18 areas surveyed. Espírito Santo (7.5%), Pará (4.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.1%) accounted for the main increases, mainly due to mining and quarrying industry (crude oil, iron ore pellets and natural gas), in the first place; mining and quarrying industry (manganese and copper ores – raw or processed) and basic metals (carbon steel square bars), in the second; and mining and quarrying industry (crude oil and natural gas), in the last one. Paraná (3.4%), Santa Catarina (3.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%) and Goiás (2.2%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (1.0%), whereas Bahia (1.0%), Minas Gerais (0.7%) and Amazonas (0.1%) completed the group of areas with increase in production in terms of the cumulative index in the year. The biggest drop, on the other hand, came from Rio Grande do Norte (-13.1%), mainly due to the negative performance of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel and motor gasoline). Mato Grosso (-7.1%), Maranhão (-6.2%), Pernambuco (-5.9%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-2.0%), São Paulo (-1.8%), Northeast Region (-1.0%) and Ceará (-0,5%) also recorded cumulative negative results for the nine months in the year.

Regarding the cumulative index in 12 months, industrial production grew by 1.5%, with increases in 12 of the 18 areas surveyed in September 2025, and other 11 recording lower dynamism against August 2025. Mato Grosso (from -0.3% to -2.1%), Maranhão (from -4.5% to -5.5%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from -1.0% to -1.9%), Pernambuco (from -2.0% to -2.6%), Paraná (from 4.7% to 4.2%) and Bahia (from 1.6% to 1.1%) recorded the main losses. Rio Grande do Norte (from -12.7% to -9.8%), Espírito Santo (from 2.4% to 4.0%), Rio de Janeiro (from 0.4% to 1.3%), Amazonas (from 1.2% to 2.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from 1.8% to 2.4%) accounted for the main increases between the two periods.
