The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) releases this Monday (22) an indicator on the innovative effort of Brazilian companies with 100 or more employed persons in the mining and manufacturing industries, related to 2022. The indicator Internal expenditure in Corporate Research and Development in relation to Revenue, which matches data from the Annual Survey of Industry (PIA Enterprise) and from the 2022 Semiannual Pintec: Basic indicators, is an IBGE survey carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
"The new indicator will cover key gaps of the national statistical system of science, technology and innovation, guiding the design and implementation of public policies and corporate strategies," highlights Fernanda Vilhena, IBGE´s Manager of Thematic and Structural Analysis.
The indicator points out that, in 2022, industrial companies with 100 or more employed persons invested 0.65% of their net revenue of sales in Research and Development (R&D), adding up to 36.9 billion reais. The indicator was higher than this average in the case of mining and quarrying industries, in which the percentage hit 1.72%, whereas the internal R&D effort in the manufacturing industries was 0.58% of the net revenue of sales.
Having released the Semiannual Pintec in March this year and the Annual Survey of Industry - Enterprise (PIA Enterprise) in June, it was possible to produce the indicator of investment in R&D, whose calculation is obtained by the ratio between the expenditure in internal Research and Development and the revenue of the companies. The revenue data refer to the net revenue of sales obtained in PIA Enterprise.
In 2022, enterprises with 500 or more employed persons invested 0.70% of their net revenue of sales in internal R&D. On the other hand, companies between 250 and 499 employed persons and between 100 and 249 implemented less effort to innovate, 0.52% and 0.37%, respectively.
The sectoral highlights, with a ratio above the average of the overall industry were: Manufacture of pharmochemicals and pharmaceuticals (3.69%), Manufacture of computer equipment, electronic and optical products (1.47%), Manufacture of rubber and plastic (1.16%), Manufacture of other transportation equipment (0.96%), Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (0.96%), Printing and reproduction of recorded media (0.86%) and Manufacture of miscellaneous products (0.67%).
On the other hand, Basic metals (0.22%), Manufacture of food products (0.26%) and Manufacture of beverages (0.28%) were those that registered the lowest proportion of these expenditures in relation to the net revenue of sales.
More about the survey
The Survey of Innovation (Pintec) began in 2000, with national results for the 1998-2000 triennium, according to the guidelines established in the Oslo Manual from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), aiming at the international comparability of its information. Pintec aims at providing information for the construction of sectoral, national and regional indicators of innovation activities of Brazilian companies with ten or more employed persons, having the activities of the mining and manufacturing industries as the universe of investigation, as well as the sectors of Electricity and gas and Selected services.
From 2021 onwards, a new survey, derived from Pintec, was carried out, though with different samples, forms of data collection and contents. This survey, Semiannual Survey of Innovation (Semiannual Pintec), result of a partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), aims at providing indicators of innovation and related themes, in a more timely manner than the traditional Pintec. The Semiannual Pintec provides information for building sectoral and national indicators of innovation activities of Brazilian companies with 100 or more employed persons.
