On the morning of this Wednesday, 20th, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released the Semiannual Survey of Innovation – Semiannual PINTEC, in the city of Brasília-DF. The survey is carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and aims at constructing sectoral and national indicators of innovative activities in Brazilian industrial companies. The current edition pointed out, among other factors, that medium-sized and large-sized Brazilian industrial companies invested R$36.9 billion in R&D in 2022. You can watch the event here.
The event was attended by the President of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann; the President of ABDI, Ricardo Cappelli; the Director of the UFRJ Institute of Economics, Carlos Frederico Leão Rocha; the Director of Production and Technological Development at ABDI, Carlos Geraldo Oliveira; the Executive Secretary of the MDIC National Development Council, Verena Hiltner; the Secretary of Industrial Development, Innovation, Commerce and Services of the MDIC, Uallace Moreira; the Executive Secretary of the MCTI, Luis Fernandes; the Chief of Staff of the MDIC, Pedro Guerra, the Director of Sustainable Economy and Industrialization at ABDI, Perpétua Almeida; in addition to directors and technical teams from the IBGE and UFRJ.
The president of IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, highlighted in his speech the relevance of PINTEC in the current Brazilian scenario. "This survey is based on a sample of companies, allowing us to have a panoramic view of the reality of Brazilian industries in relation to innovative decisions. These innovations can be product or process innovations and, in a certain way, point to the country as a whole, as well as for the federal, state and municipal governments. The objective is to understand how companies behave, especially during this period of technological revolution that Brazil is experiencing. Therefore, this information works as a thermometer to evaluate the behavior of Brazilian companies, based on a sample collected by PINTEC every six months", he stated.
Mr. Pochmann also highlighted the challenges that Brazil faces. "The current government's effort seems absolutely necessary to me so that we can converge on the restructuring of productive activity with more appropriate information to those who make decisions. It is important to highlight that the information with which we have had contact now demonstrates the stage at which we find ourselves. It is like a photograph of the present moment, but it is certainly not the place where we want to remain. We want to move towards a higher situation, for it is obviously possible to achieve it, and Brazil has already demonstrated this capacity to grow at other times", he stated.
The president of ABDI, Ricardo Capelli, highlighted the importance of the partnership with the IBGE and of the survey for the development of Brazil. "The survey is very important, and the partnership with the IBGE for us at ABDI is strategic, for the IBGE is a central institution in the country. PINTEC provides some indicators that help us in the design of public policies and help us understand where Brazil is headed. We not only want to reinforce this partnership with the IBGE, but we also want to expand it. We are discussing a series of other initiatives, and we believe that the IBGE can be a fundamental partner for us", he said.
The Executive Secretary of the MCTI, Luis Fernandes, congratulated the IBGE, ABDI and UFRJ for the initiative and added that “the study will be fundamental in defining the projection method to be used in order to have more security in relation to business investment data in research and development, which will be useful for international comparisons.”
In addition to the presentation of Semiannual PINTEC, the event also marked the signing of a Protocol of Intent between ABDI and the IBGE. The document aims to bring the two entities closer together and contributes to the execution of joint actions to strengthen the Brazilian industrial sector and the country's development. The document was signed by the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the president of ABDI, Ricardo Cappelli, and the director of sustainable economy and industrialization at ABDI, Perpétua Almeida.
Carlos Leão Rocha, director of the UFRJ Institute of Economics, highlighted the quality of IBGE's technical services. “This partnership has very good consequences for all of us. The first is the analytical capacity that the university gains. We have learned a lot from the surveys that were carried out. Most importantly, we are able to quickly provide deep timely analysis of survey results. I would like to congratulate the IBGE for the quality of its technicians, we have learned a lot from them. We hope that the results can greatly contribute to the future of the country”, said Mr. Rocha.
In its 3rd edition, the Semiannual Survey of Innovation – Semiannual PINTEC 2022 continues the production of a new generation of statistics on innovation and related topics for the Brazilian industrial sector, within the scope of companies with 100 or more employed persons. The survey is carried out every six months to collect information from selected companies. However, its reference period is annual for published statistics.
In this edition, Basic Indicators were released, with the purpose of providing data for the construction of indicators of innovative activities of the Brazilian industrial companies, according to the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE 2.0.
