The IBGE is holding today (17), in Macapá (AP), another edition of the seminar My Partner, My Brazil, Our IBGE. The event, held at the headquarters of the State Secretariat of Planning (SEPLAN) of Amapá, brought together representatives from public authorities, academia and partner institutions around the importance of statistical and geoscientific information for the development of the state.
The meeting is part of the actions planned to celebrate the IBGE's 90th anniversary and recognizes institutional partners who contributed to the production and dissemination of information in Brazil. Throughout the program, the IBGE´s role in building evidence-based public policies and strengthening citizenship through access to reliable data was highlighted.
The superintendent of the IBGE in Amapá, Augusto Borges, highlighted the strategic role of the partnerships and the impact of data on the lives of the population. “Throughout these 90 years, the IBGE has been a pillar for the production and consolidation of statistical and geographic data. This is directly reflected in the lives of citizens, with accurate, consolidated information used for public policies that really make a difference. We need to look at the size of the responsibility that the IBGE carries,” stated him.
He also highlighted that the Institute's activities have always been based on institutional cooperation. “The IBGE has always needed partnerships in the areas of logistics, infrastructure and technical support. Today, we are here to reinforce this importance, with institutions such as Seplan, Docas de Santana, universities, researchers and all stakeholders involved. To attract industries and new businesses to the state, the IBGE's internationally recognized credibility is essential. We need to continuously strengthen and restore this trust, showing how data accuracy contributes to the development of society,” added him.
During his participation, Borges also read a text in honor of the IBGE's 90th anniversary, rescuing its historical trajectory. “On May 29, 1936, the IBGE was born with the mission of portraying a country of continental dimension that was still seeking to understand its own reality. Nine decades later, that mission remains the same. What has changed is our ability to fulfill it. Today, we produce surveys and indicators in a number of areas, from population censuses to cartographic and territorial data, always with the technical rigor that society expects. More than a technical institution, the IBGE has become a mirror of Brazil,” highlighted him.
Then Borges gave an explanation in which he presented the IBGE in Amapá and its partners and also highlighted the importance of a local superintendency focused on partnerships. He also mentioned three pillars of the IBGE's operations: territorial capillarity, saving public resources and technical quality of data.
What the partners say
During the event, Amapá's Secretary of Planning, Jucinete Carvalho de Alencar, highlighted the historical and institutional relevance of the IBGE for the state and Brazil. “It is an honor to welcome the IBGE at SEPLAN and celebrate 90 years. Talking about the IBGE is talking about the history of Brazil and Amapá. It means speaking beyond numbers, data and information, it means recognizing that behind this great institution there are professionals, men and women, who honor each study and each piece of data produced,” stated her.
She also highlighted regional challenges and the importance of statistics to guide public policies. “Crossing the entire territory of Amapá is not simple: it involves logistical challenges, the presence in quilombola and indigenous territories, and the commitment to giving visibility, through numbers, to each of these populations. These data are the great guideposts for public policies. When we talk about education, health and security, we need to remember that each materialized delivery is built based on studies carried out with criteria and technical rigor. The IBGE rigor gives us confidence to take decisions,” pointed her out.
The secretary also emphasized the continuous use of the IBGE´s information in public management. “Throughout our entire career, whether professional or academic, we use the IBGE data. Governments take decisions based on evidence. In Amapá, we seek to understand the reduction in violence, the advancement in employment, who we are and where we want to go. We are developing a Public Policy Observatory, and I dare say that around 90% of our database is the IBGE,” concluded her.
Statistician Francisco de Assis, from SEPLAN, highlighted the historical partnership with the IBGE throughout his speech, showing a timeline that revived the Institute's trajectory in Amapá. He displayed pictures and shared stories about daily work in past decades, remembering the use of typewriters and mimeograph machines, in contrast to the current reality, marked by computers and advanced technologies. The presentation highlighted not only the evolution of instruments and processes, but also the continuous commitment of professionals involved in the production of statistical information in the state.
Afterwards, Assis handed over a plaque commemorating the 90th anniversary to superintendent Augusto Borges. Also receiving plaques of recognition were employees Adrimauro Gemaque, who completed 49 years working at the IBGE, Raul Tabajara and Joel Lima da Silva, who is the head of the Sector of Information Dissemination at the Superintendency of Amapá.
The event is part of a series of actions planned to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Among these initiatives is the holding of seminars aimed at recognizing several partners that have marked the IBGE's nine decades of activity, both in the public and private sectors.
