The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released, this Tuesday (16), the updated geographies of the country with reference to the year 2025. These divisions are part of the Geographic Reference Framework for the Production, Analysis and Dissemination of Statistics and serve as a basis for the dissemination of official data, incorporating new territorial borders and nomenclatures of the Territorial Division of Brazil 2025.

Among the main updates for 2025, it is noteworthy that only the Metropolitan Area of Palmas (TO) underwent a change in its composition, receiving the addition of 15 new municipalities, according to State Complementary Law No. 167, of July 22, 2025. On the other hand, six new Metropolitan Areas were created in Amapá, according to State Complementary Law No. 178, of November 6, 2025. As a result, all municipalities in Amapá will now be part of one of the seven Metropolitan Areas of the State. Regarding the Brazilian Semi-Arid region, the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene) reported that its territorial composition remains unchanged, with 1,477 municipalities distributed among the states of Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo. Of this total, 1,427 municipalities were already part of the previous delimitation and have been confirmed. The remaining 50 municipalities, whose inclusion in the Semi-Arid area was considered temporary, have not yet been altered by any new regulations.

Another relevant change occurred in the Boa Vista Free Trade Area (RR), administered by the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Trade Zone (Suframa), which was expanded with the inclusion of the municipality of Pacaraima (RR), according to Law No. 15,273, of November 26, 2025.

In addition to these changes, the IBGE adjusted the borders of several territorial divisions to make them compatible with the 2025 municipal mesh. These include: Municipalities in the SUFRAMA Area of Operation, SUDENE Area of Operation, Semi-Arid region, Coastal Municipalities, MATOPIBA, Population Arrangement, Urban Concentration, Urban Hierarchy, Geographic Mesoregion, Geographic Microregion, Metropolitan Division, Metropolitan Category, Metropolitan Subcategory, Urban Cluster, Expanded Urban Articulation Region, Intermediate Urban Articulation Region, Immediate Urban Articulation Region and Rural Area.

All updated data is available in the Geographic Reference Framework and can be accessed through the Interactive Geographic Platform (PGI), which offers map visualization and facilitates consultation by public managers, researchers, and society in general.
