Inflation preview of September stands at 0.13%

The inflation preview of September stood at 0.13%, after recording 0.19% in August. The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), released today (25) by the IBGE, indicates that the biggest change (0.50%) and the main impact (0.08 percentage points) came from Housing. Other six groups recorded increases.
IPCA-E, the cumulative IPCA-15 in the quarter, hit 0.62%, above the rate of 0.56% registered in the same period in 2023. In the year, cumulative IPCA-15 reached 3.15%. As for the cumulative index in the last 12 months, the rate was 4.12%, below the 4.35% of the immediately previous 12 months. In September 2023, the rate was 0.35%.
As for Housing, the main impact came from residential electricity, which went from -0.42% in August to 0.84% in September, with the red tariff flag in effect since September 01. Also, there were changes with drops of 2.75% in Belém (-2.52%), since August 7; and an average adjustment of 0.06% in one of the concessionaires of Porto Alegre (2.81%), since August 19.
Also in Housing, a highlight is the rise of water and sewage rates (0.38%) after changes and an average drop of 0.61% in São Paulo (-0.15%), in effect since July 23; of 5.81% in Salvador (3.02%), in effect since August 01; and of 8.05% in Fortaleza (5.23%), starting on August 05.
Another highlight is the result of the subitem piped gas (0.19%), after price adjustment of 2.77% in Rio de Janeiro (1.43%), since August 01; and of the change in the infrastructure of ranges of consumption in Curitiba (-2.01%), also since August 01.
The group Food and Beverages, the most relevant to the index, registered an increase of 0.05%, after two months of fall of prices. Food at home changed by -0.01%, after drops of 1.30% in the previous month. Contributions to the fall of prices came from the onion (-21.88%), potato (-13.45%) and tomato (-10.70%). With increases, papaya (30.02%), chunkey banana (7.29%) and ground coffee (3.32%) stood out.
Prices of food away from home (0.22%) also rose, with deceleration from August (0.49%), due to less significant increases of snacks (from 0.76% in August to 0.20% in September) and meal (0.37% in August to 0.22% in September).
The other five groups that registered increases in the IPCA-15 of September were Health and Personal Care (0.32%), Household articles (0,17%), Wearing apparel (0.12%), Communication (0.07%) and Education (0.05%).
Personal expenses (-0.04%) and Transportation (-0.08%) recorded drops. In the latter, with an impact of -0.02 p.p., the result was influenced by gasoline (-0.66% and -0.03 p.p.). As for the other fuels (-0.64%), ethanol (-1.22%) also dropped, whereas vehicle gas (2,94%) and diesel (0.18%) recorded increases. Airfares also rose (4.51% and 0.03 p.p).
By area, IPCA-15 has increases in seven areas in September
In the regional analysis, seven areas of coverage of IPCA-15 recorded increases in September. The main change was that in Salvador (0.35%), with an impact from the rises of gasoline (2.17%) and bottled gas (3.04%). The lowest result was that of Recife (-0.37%), with an influence from the drop of prices of gasoline (-4.51%) and onion (-31.80%).
More about the survey
In order to calculate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from August 15 to September 13, 2024 (reference) and compared with those in effect from July 16 to August 14, 2024 (base). The indicator refers to families with incomes of 1 to 40 minimum wages and covers the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, as well as Brasília and the city of Goiânia.
