IPCA-E, which is cumulative IPCA-15 in the quarter, hit 0.62%, above the rate observed in the same period in 2023 (0.56%).
In the year, the cumulative increase of IPCA-15 reached 3.15%. The cumulative index in the last 12 months is 4.12%, below the 4.35% of the immediately previous 12 months. In September 2023, IPCA-15 hit 0.35%.

Among the nine groups of products and services surveyed, seven recorded increase in September. The main change and positive impact came from Housing (0.50% and 0.08 p.p). Food and beverages (0.05% and 0.01 p.p.), which accounts for the main contribution to the index, registered a rise in prices after two months of decrease. The other changes ranged between a drop of 0.08% in Transportation and the rise of 0.32% in Health and personal care.

In Housing (0.50%), the main impact came from residential electricity, which changed from -0.42% in August to 0.84% in September, while the red tariff flag in effect since September 01. Also, price changes were as follows: a drop of 2.75% in Belém (-2.52%), since August 7; and average adjustment of 0,06% in one of the concessionaires in Porto Alegre (2.81%), since August 19.
Also relevant is the rise of water and sewage rates (0.38%), which results from the following adjustments: average drop of 0.61% in São Paulo (-0.15%), since July 23; of 5.81% in Salvador (3.02%), since August 1; and of 8.05% in Fortaleza (5.23%), since August 5. The result of the subitem piped gas (0.19%) after the adjustment of 2.77% in Rio de Janeiro (1.43%), since August 1st; and the change in the structure of consumption ranges in Curitiba (-2,01%), also since August 01.
As for Transportation (-0.08% and -0.02 p.p), the result was influenced by gasoline (-0.66% and -0.03 p.p.). As for the other fuels (-0.64%), ethanol (-1.22%) also decreased, whereas vehicle gas (2.94%) and diesel (0.18%) increased. Airfares also rose (4.51% and 0.03 p.p).
In the group Food and beverages (0.05%), food at home recorded a change of -0.01%, after a drop of 1.30% in the previous month. Accounting for this result were drops of onion (-21.88%), potato (-13.45%) and tomato (-10.70%). As for increases, papaya (30.02%), chunkey banana (7.29%) and ground coffee (3.32%) stood out.
Food away from home (0.22%) decelerated from August (0.49%), due to less significant rises in the prices of snacks (from 0.76% in August to 0.20% in September) and meal (from 0.37% in August to 0.22% in September).
As for regional indexes, seven areas of coverage grew in September. The biggest change was that of Salvador (0.35%), due to the rise of gasoline (2.17%) and of bottled gas (3.04%). Recife (-0.37%) recorded the lowest result, with fall of prices of gasoline (-4.51%) and onion (-31.80%).

In order to calculate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from August 15 to September 13, 2024 (reference) and compared with those in effect from July 16 to August 14, 2024 (base). The indicator refers to families with incomes of 1 to 40 minimum wages and covers the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, as well as Brasília and the city of Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as that of IPCA, the difference lies in the period of data collection and in the geographic coverage.
