Volume of retail trade sales in the country increased by 0.9% in April from March, recording the fourth consecutive increase. Against the same period a year ago, increase was 4.5%. In the first four months of the year, the sector recorded an increase of 2.3% and, in the last months, of 0.8%. These data come from the Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC), released today by the IBGE.

In extended retail trade, which includes, besides the activities of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and of construction material, volume of sales recorded an increase of 0.7% from March.

“The four months of the year were positive, but they have been on a downward trend: from 2.4% in January to 0.9% in April. The increase has been consistent, but uneven. Retail trade as a whole is 4.0% above the pre-pandemic level, in February 2020. But among the activities it is uneven,” says Cristiano Santos, manager of the survey.

Among the activities, above the pre-pandemic level, Santos highlights Pharmaceuticals (17.7%), Construction material (9.1%) and Other personal and household articles (7.3%). Below the pre-pandemic level are Office material and equipment (-11.7%), Furniture and household appliances (-10.7%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-8.6%).

In comparison with March, half of the eight activities recorded increase in volume of sales. In terms of positive results, Furniture and household appliances (2.3%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (1.7%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (0.4%) and Other personal and household articles (0.1%).

In terms of negative results: Fuels and lubricants (-0.1%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-1.1%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.6%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-6.7%). For extended retail trade, both the activity of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (-0.2%) and Construction Material (-2.0%) recorded negative results.

“The downward trend was influenced by the increase in Fabric, apparel and footwear and Furniture and household appliances. Hypermarkets and supermarkets recorded decreases, but the activities that increased are significant too,” Mr. Santos.

Retail trade sales increased 4.5% against April 2021

In the interannual comparison, trade increased 4.5%, with positive results in five of the eight activities surveyed.

Fabric, apparel and footwear (33.9%), Fuels and lubricants (9.7%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (4.0%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (3.5%) and Other personal and domestic articles (1.5%).

On the other hand, three activities recorded decreases in the interannual comparison: Furniture and household appliances (-8.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-0.9%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.5%). Considering extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 2.1% and Construction material fell 10.1%.

“In extended retail trade, the activity Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 2.1% against April 2021, the first one after five consecutive months of increase. Construction material fell 10.1% against 2021, versus an increase of 1.2% in the previous month,” Mr. Santos adds.

More about the survey

The Monthly Survey of Services produces indicators to monitor the short-term behavior of the services sector in Brazil. The survey investigates the gross revenue from services in formal enterprises employing 20 or more persons, and whose main activity is retail trade.

Having started in 1995, the PMC brings monthly results of changes in sales volume and nominal revenue for retail trade and extended retail trade (cars and construction material) for Brazil and Federation Units. The data collection technique includes the pre-filled electronic questionnaire (CASI) and personal interview with paper questionnaire (PAPI). The results are available at Sidra.
