Industrial output showed positive rates in eight out of 15 places surveyed by the IBGE in October, compared to September, driving the positive result (0.1%) for national industry. The biggest advances were in Goiás (6.5%), Mato Grosso (5.8%), Amazonas (4.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.1%). They were followed by Bahia (2.7%), Minas Gerais (2.1%), Santa Catarina (0.6%) and Paraná (0.5%). The data are from the Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM) Regional, released today (11).

“Industry in Rio de Janeiro, the main positive influence, grew 4.1% in October, after 2 months of negative results, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 6.0%. The sector of mining and quarrying, chemicals and petroleum derivatives were those that most influenced this positive movement this month,” explains Bernardo Almeida, an analyst of the survey.

Minas Gerais takes second place in terms of positive influence, advancing 2.1% with a contribution from the mining and quarrying sector. With this result, industry in Minas Gerais reaches its third positive rate for the third consecutive month, with a 3.5% gain accumulated in the period.

When reading the negative results, São Paulo industry stands out as the main influence. The location with the highest industrial concentration (approximately 33%), São Paulo fell 1.2% this month, mainly influenced by the sectors of petroleum and food. According to Bernardo Almeida, this is the second consecutive negative rate for the São Paulo industry, accumulating a loss of 1.7% in these two months. “Still, with this rate, São Paulo is 22.8% below its highest level, reached in March 2011,” comments the analyst.

Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%) recorded the highest decline in absolute terms and the second biggest negative influence this month. Industry in Rio Grande do Sul interrupted three consecutive months of production growth, a period in which it accumulated gains of 10.8%. “The sector of pulp, paper and paper products, and petroleum derivatives influenced this behavior of industry in Rio Grande do Sul.” analyzed Almeida.

Espírito Santo (-1.7%), Pará (-1.4%), São Paulo (-1.2%), Pernambuco (-0.6%), Ceará (-0.3%) and the Northeast Region (-0.1%) also recorded negative results.

Industry declines in 6 out of 18 places surveyed compared to October 2024

In comparison with October 2024, the industrial sector fell 0.5% in October 2025, with six out of 18 places surveyed showing negative results. It is worth mentioning that October 2025 (23 days) had the same number of business days as the same month in the previous year (23).

Mato Grosso do Sul (-17.8%) recorded a double-digit reduction and the most accentuated this month, mainly due to the negative behavior observed in the sectors of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol) and pulp, paper and paper products (pulp).

Rio Grande do Norte (-9.5%), Mato Grosso (-8.2%), São Paulo (-4.6%), Paraná (-4.1%) and Pará (-3.9) completed the group of places with a decline in production in the monthly index for October 2025. Maranhão, with a null change (0.0%) this month, repeated the production level recorded in October 2024. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (18.3%), Amazonas (12.5%) and Goiás (11.7%) recorded double-digit advances, the highest ones this month.

More about the survey

Regional PIM has been producing short-term indicators since the 1970s regarding the behavior of the real product from mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. It brings monthly indexes for 17 Federation Units whose share are at least 0.5% of the total value added of the national industry and for the Northeast as a whole: Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region. The survey results are also available on Sidra, the IBGE database. The next release of the Regional PIM is scheduled for January 14.
