Slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs and chickens increase in Q4 2024

In Q4 2024, cattle slaughter increased by 3.5% against Q4 2023, salughter of hogs and pigs increased by 0.6% and that of chickens was up by 5.3%. Against Q3 2024, slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs and chickens dropped, respectively, by 8.6%, 4.8% and 0.7%. Data come from the first results of the Quarterly Livestock Surveys, released today (11) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In Q4 2024, 9.48 million head of cattle were slaughtered in places under some type of sanitary inspection. Slaughter of hogs and pigs amounted to 14.23 million head and that of chickens, to 1.61 billion head.
A total of 2.48 million tonnes were produced, an increment of 1.8% from the same quarter in 2023 and a drop of 9.9% against the amount obtained in Q3 2024.
The cumulative weight of carcass of pigs reached 1.31 million tonnes in Q4 2024, an increase of 0.6% against Q4 2023 and a drop of 6.8% against Q3 2024. The cumulative weight of chicken carcass amounted to 3.35 million tonnes, an increase of 5.1% from the same period a year ago and a decrease of 3.4% against Q3 2024.
Acquisiton of milk and rawhide
The first results showed that, in Q4 2024, acquisition of raw milk by establishments under sanitary inspection, reached 6.75 billion liters. This figure corresponds to an increase of 4.1% against the volume acquired in Q4 2023 and of 7.3% against that obtained in the immediately previous quarter.
Tanneries responsible for at least five thousand whole units of rawhide reported having received 9.85 million rawhide pieces in Q4 2024. The amount represents an increase of 10.1% against that in Q4 2023 and a decrease of 6.6% from Q3 2024.
Production of hen eggs
The production of hen eggs, in Q4 2024, reached 1.19 billion dozen. The result represented an increment of 11.0% against the same period in 2023 and a drop of 0.8% against Q3 2024.
More about the survey
On a quarterly basis, the IBGE carries out the official statistical surveys of the agricultural scenario, which are the Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter, Quarterly Survey of Milk, Quarterly Survey of Leather and Production of Hen Eggs. In order to meet requests from users to quickly access the information of the agricultural scenario, the IBGE began to release the first results of these surveys from the first quarter of 2018 onwards. These data are available nearly one month ahead the general release of the data in the newspaper IBGE Indicators: Statistics of the Livestock Production.
The data of the surveys can be accessed on Sidra. The next release of the complete results, related to the fourth quarter of 2024, will be on March 18.
