Slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs, and chickens grow in Q3 2024

Cattle slaughter grew 14.8% compared with the third quarter of 2023, that of hogs and pigs increased 1.9% and that of chickens, 1.9%, a rise of 2.7%. Compared with the second quarter of 2024, the slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs, and chickens rose 3.7%, 2.4% and 0.9%, respectively. These are the first results of the Quarterly Livestock Surveys, released today (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In the third quarter of 2024, 10.33 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. Slaughter of hogs and pigs registered 14.92 million head, whereas that o chickens, 1.62 billion.
2.74 million tonnes of cattle carcasses were produced, an increase of 14.3% in relation to the third quarter of 2023 and of 6.3% in relation to the second quarter of 2024.
The cumulative weight of hogs and pigs carcasses was of 1.40 million tonnes in the third quarter of 2024, an increase of 1.7% compared with the third quarter of 2023 and of 4.1% in relation to the second quarter of 2024. On the other hand, the cumulative weight of chicken carcasses was of 3.47 million tonnes, rising 4.7% in relation to the same period last year and 1.1% over the second quarter of 2024.
Acquisition of milk and leather
The survey showed that the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some sort of sanitary inspection was of 6.28 billion liters in the third quarter of 2024. The value corresponded to the reduction of 0.6% in comparison with the volume registered in the third quarter of 2023 and to an increase of 7.7% from the figure in the immediately previous quarter.
The tanneries in charge of at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle rawhide per year reported to have received 10.34 million whole cattle rawhide pieces in the third quarter of 2024. That amount represented an increase of 15.1% compared with that recorded in the third quarter of 2023 and of 2.6% against the second quarter of 2024.
Production og hen eggs
In the third quarter of 2024, 1.18 billion dozens of hen eggs were produced. That result represented an increase of 9.0% against the same period in 2023 and of 2.0% against the second quarter of 2024.
More about the survey
On a quarterly basis, the IBGE carries out the official statistical surveys of the agricultural scenario, which are the Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter, Quarterly Survey of Milk, Quarterly Survey of Leather and Production of Hen Eggs. In order to meet requests from users to quickly access the information of the agricultural scenario, the IBGE began to release the first results of these surveys from the first quarter of 2018 onwards. These data are available nearly one month ahead the general release of the data in the newspaper IBGE Indicators: Statistics of the Livestock Production.
The data of the surveys can be accessed on Sidra. The next release of the complete results, related to the third quarter of 2024, will be on December 5.
