Volume of services in Brazil increased 0.6% in January, after two consecutive months of drop, according to the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) released today (25) by the IBGE. The high was boosted by the sector of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing, which grew 2.8% from December to January, recovering the loss from the last two months of 2019.
In comparison with January last year, volume of services increased 1.8%, reaching the fifth positive rate in a row. In the cumulative index over the last 12 months, the growth was 1%.
“The sector of transportation, which is the second most influential sector among the five ones that were surveyed, was driven by the rail and road transportation of cargo. They are included in the land transportation, which increased 4% in January, also after two negative results in a row”, explains the survey manager, Rodrigo Lobo, highlighting that the cargo transportation is influenced by the industrial sector, which increased 0.9% in January.
Four out of the five activities surveyed had positive results. Besides the sector of transportation, other services (1.2%), services rendered to families (0.7%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.1%) increased. The only sector to report a decrease in the period was information and communication (-0.9%).
Regionally, 16 out of 27 Federation Units followed the growth recorded in the country. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which together account for almost 60% of the total volume of services, decreased 0.3% and 0.4%, respectively, in comparison with December.
“As a result, the positive highlights came from the Federal District, with an increase of 7.4%, followed by Mato Grosso, with a rise of 14.1%, Minas Gerais, which grew 2.2% and, lastly, Pernambuco, increasing 6.7% against December 2019”, says Rodrigo.
