May's inflation (0.58%) slowed compared to April's result (0.67%), but accumulates a rise of 3.20% in the first five months of 2026, reaching 4.72% in the last 12 months. With a rate of 1.33% and a 0.29 pp impact, the food and beverage group accounted for half of the month's result, followed by the housing group with a 1.22% change and a 0.18 pp impact, and health and personal care, whose increase was 0.90% and an impact of 0.12 pp. The sub-item with the greatest individual impact (0.15 pp) was residential electricity, which rose 3.67%. The results of the country's official inflation were released this morning (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

In May, food consumed at home registered a change of 1.65%, influenced by increases in potatoes (44.69%), tomatoes (20.62%), onions (16.80%), and meats (1.39%). "The increase in these items is due to lower supply and also influenced by freight costs due to the rise in fuel prices," said the IPCA manager, José Fernando Gonçalves. Among decreases, ground coffee (-2.38%) and fruits (-0.70%) stand out.

The Housing group accelerated from April (0.63%) to May (1.22%) influenced by the residential electricity sub-item, which rose 3.67% and was the main individual impact on the month's result (0.15 pp). “The increase was due to a combination of increases in some areas and the implementation, in May, of the yellow tariff flag, with an increase in the electricity bill of R$ 1.885 for every 100 kWh consumed,” explained the manager.

The incorporated rises were as follows: 5.91% in Aracaju (7.37%), 5.59% in Fortaleza (6.94%) and 4.78% in Salvador (6.73%), all three effective since April 22; 12.36% in Campo Grande (13.56%) from April 24; 3.86% in Recife (8.84%) effective since April 29 and 5.21% in Belo Horizonte (2.27%), from May 28.

In the Health and Personal Care category (0.90%), the increases in personal hygiene items (1.95%), particularly perfume (4.42%), and health insurance plans, with a change of 0.50%, stand out.

The change in the Transportation group (-0.46%), the only one with a decrease in May, was due to the decline in fuels (-1.95%), with ethanol falling from 0.62% in April to -6.20% in May, diesel from 4.46% to -2.34%, and gasoline, the sub-item with the greatest negative impact on the month's result (-0.08 pp), from 1.86% to -1.46%. Vehicle gas, on the other hand, moved in the opposite direction, rising 5.81% in May after a 1.24% decrease in April.

Regarding regional indices, the largest changes were recorded in Aracaju and Campo Grande, both at 1.31%, influenced by increases in residential electricity (7.37% and 13.56%) and tomatoes (32.75% and 22.61%), respectively. The smallest change occurred in Curitiba (0.29%), due to the decline in vehicle registrations and licenses (-4.83%) and gasoline (-2.49%).
