Still life is an artistic genre that combines everyday objects with contemporary themes, in order to encourage reflection, either by aesthetic means or by significance. In spite of the different methods and motivations involved, it is possible to find similarities between the arts and statistics.
Just like works of art, the surveys conducted by the IBGE, for example, the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), deal with common, everyday life objects that can lead us to analyze and reflect upon social behaviors. Based on this analogy, the October edition of Retratos magazine presents some singularities of the Brazilian population’s eating habits.
Some of the most relevant items in household budgets in 2017, as IPCA figures show, are: French bread, cheese, long-life milk, ground coffee, cookies, rice, chicken and soft drinks and mineral water.
