Volume of services changed 0.3% in Brazil in June 2025, the fifth positive result in a row. As a result, the sector accumulated a 2.0% gain since February and renew the peak of the time series, reached in October 2024. The data are from the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), released today (14) by the IBGE.

The rise in the month was due to transportation services, which recorded the only positive rate this month, with a growth of 1.5%. According to the manager of the survey, Rodrigo Lobo, the sector registered a more pronounced growth of both cargo transportation and passenger air transportation. "The advance of air transportation was correlated with a lower price of airfare in the last three months, which has increased the real revenue of the airlines," explained him. "On the other hand, cargo transportation was related to a slightly greater dynamism of the economy, because this segment is linked to the drainage of harvests, inputs and industrial goods."

Among the other sectors, all of them with negative rates, losses in the sectors of other services (-1.3%) and services rendered to families (-1.4%) stood out. Information and communication services (-0.2%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.1%) recorded slight negative changes. Despite the negative rate, this sector registered advances in legal activities and business management consultancy, which softened the loss in relation to May, when it advanced 0.9%. “The advance of legal activities was due to the winning cases of law firms,” said Rodrigo Lobo. “It is a punctual movement. On the other hand, business management consultancies are linked to a modernization movement, process optimization, cost minimization and widening of companies' profit margins.”

The national growth was followed by 11 out of 27 Federation Units, with the largest positive impacts coming from the Federal District (2.3%) and Paraná (0.8%).

In the cumulative index from January to June this year, volume of services expanded 2.5% over the same period of 2024. The largest positive contribution was with the sector of information and communication (6.2%), leveraged by information technology services. Other important growths came from the sector of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.7%), especially air transportation, and also from the sector of professional, administrative and complementary services (2.3%), especially agencying of advertisement and business management consultancy. The growth was followed by 20 out of 27 Federation Units, especially São Paulo (3.9%).

Tourism activities retreat 0.9% in June

In June 2025, the index of tourism activities retreated 0.9% compared to the immediately preceding month, the second consecutive negative result, when it accumulated a loss of 1.3%. With this performance, the tourism sector was 11.6% above the level of February 2020 and 1.8% below the apex of its time series, reached in December 2024.

In regional terms, 11 out of 17 places surveyed followed the drop movement recorded in the national tourism activity (-0.9%). The most relevant negative influence came from Minas Gerais (-4.2%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%), Santa Catarina (-3.6%) and Paraná (-2.1%). In the opposite direction, São Paulo (0.6%) and Federal District (3.4%) led the tourism gains this month.

In the comparison between June 2025 and June 2024, the tourism activity rate in Brazil expanded 4.1%, the 13th consecutive positive result, mainly driven by the increase in the revenue from companies operating in passenger air transportation, catering services and hotels.

Twelve out of 17 Federation Units where the indicator is investigated advanced in tourism services, especially São Paulo (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (8.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (38.5%), followed by Federal District (7.5%), Paraná (4.7%) and Amazonas (14.2%). In contrast, Minas Gerais (-7.6%) exerted the major negative impact of the month.

June has highs in passenger (2.1%) and cargo transportation (0.7%)

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil grew 2.1% in June against May. It is the fifth consecutive positive result, when it accumulated a gain of 14.3%. Therefore, the segment is 12.4% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic), though 13.7% below the peak of the time series (February 2014).

On the other hand, cargo transportation advanced 0.7%, after a loss of 0.5% in the last two months, being 6.2% below the peak of its time series (July 2023). Regarding the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 35.4% above February 2020.

Compared to June 2024, passenger transportation was up 10.4% in June 2025, the tenth consecutive positive result, while cargo transportation advanced 0.4%, the second advance in a row.

In the cumulative index in the first semester of 2025, passenger transportation grew 6.7% compared to the same period of 2024, while that of cargo fell 1.1% in the same period.

More about the survey

The Monthly Survey of Services produces indicators to monitor the short-term behavior of the services sector in Brazil. The survey investigates the gross revenue from services in formal enterprises employing 20 or more persons, in which the main activity is a non-financial service, excluding the areas of health and education.  It produces results for Brazil and all the Federation Units. The results are available on Sidra. The next release of the Monthly Survey of Services, related to July, will be on September 12.
