The sector of services fell by 0.6% from August to September and interrupted a series of positive rates in the five preceding months, a period with a cumulative increase of 6.2%. Considering the September result, the sector was still 3.7% above the pre-pandemic figure, regiteredd in February last year, but it is 8.0% below the record reached in November 2014. These are data from the Monthly Survey of Services - PMS, released today (12) by the IBGE.
Four of the five activities surveyed rcorded decreases too, with a highlight to transportation (-1.9%), which recorded its most significant negative rate since April last year (-19.0%). “Th main negative impact on this decrease of the services sector came from transportation, affected by decreases in air tansportation of passengers, due to the rise of 28.19% in the price of air fares, in road transportation of passengers and also railroad transportation of passengers,” says Rodrigo Lobo, manager of the survey.
The other activities recording decrease in the period were other services (-4.7%), information and communication (-0.9%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%). “There was widespread decline in the services sector. By segment, the main negative contributions came from air transportation of passengers, auxiliary financial services, surveyed within other services, and from telecommunications, within information and communication services,” says the researcher.
He highlights that retraction in financial services is explained by the creation of a high basis for comparison. “The reduction of the interest rate caused persons and institutional investments to find other forms of investment instead of savings and having security brokers as financial intermediaries. So these services have recorded very significant increases in the last few years. The decrease of this segment in September was due to this high basis for comparison.”
With its sixth consecutive rate in a row, the sector of services rendered to families (1.3%) was the only one to advance from August to September. “These are exactly the most affected services by the economic effects of the pandemic and they have survived so far, with some increase.” With the advance of vaccination and flexibilization of economic activities, persons are now consuming again from lodging and food services,” says Mr. Lobo, as he highlight the sector is still 16.2% below the pre pandemic level.
In September, 20 of the 27 Federation Units recorded decreases, against the previous month. The biggest impact came from São Paulo (-1.6%), followed by Minas Gerais (-1.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.3%), Pernambuco (-2.2%) and Goiás (-2.2%). Rio de Janeiro (2.0%), Federal District (2.9%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (3.6%) recorded the biggest decreases.
Against September last year, the volume of services advanced 11.4%, seventh positive rate in a row. In the year, the sector had a cumulative increase of 11.4% against the same period year ago. The cumulative index in 12 months reached 6.8%, the highest rate in the time series started in December 2012.
Index of tourism activities increases by 0.8% in September, fifth positive rate in a row
The tourism activity index increased by 0.8% from August, fifth positive rate in a row, with a cumulative increase of 49.9% in the period. Despite the result, the tourism segment is still 20.4% below the level of February last year, in the pre pandemic scenario. From the 12 areas surveyed, six recorded increases, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (4.0%), followed by Santa Catarina (5.7%), Bahia (1.5%) and Goiás (2.5%). The most significant negative results in the month were those of São Paulo (-1.7%) and Ceará (-5.2%).
