In the first three months of 2019, the country's milk acquisition reached 6.2 billion liters, the highest volume purchased in a first quarter since 1997, according to the Quarterly Surveys of Livestock released today by the IBGE. This result represents a growth of 3% compared to the first quarter of last year.

Survey manager Angela Lordão says this high is relates to the improvement in milk prices on the market: "Although this information is not investigated by our quarterly livestock survey, we know that the increase in prices has been encouraging production, causing an increase in acquisition," she says.

The other record was in the slaughter of hogs and pigs, which grew 5.5% in relation to the same quarter of 2018, reaching 11.3 million head, the best result for the period since 2001.

Angela points out that this sector has kept record levels due to the international market. "The end of the embargo imposed by Russia on imports of Brazilian meat has helped not only the recovery of the slaughter of hogs and pigs but also the recovery of cattle." In fact, cattle slaughtering grew by 1.6% compared to the first quarter of 2018, reaching 7.9 million head.

The quarterly surveys also showed that hen egg production was a time series record for the first quarter, reaching 912.6 million dozens, up 6% over the same period in 2018. The acquisition of Leather, however, reduced 2.2% in the same comparison, reaching 8.5 million pieces.
