Cattle slaughter grows 7.0% in relation to the same period last year

In the third quarter of 2025, 11.23 million head of cattle were slaughtered, which represented an increase of 7.0% compared to the third quarter of 2024 and an increase of 6.7% compared to that recorded in the immediately previous quarter. The slaughter of 15.80 million head of hogs and pigs increased 5.3% compared to the same period of the previous year and 4.7% compared to the second quarter of 2025. On the other hand, the slaughter of 1.69 billion chicken head represented an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2024 and an increase of 3.0% compared to the second quarter of 2025. The data are the first results of the Livestock Production Statistics for the third quarter of 2025, released today (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In the third quarter of 2025, 11.23 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some sort of sanitary inspection. This amount represented a positive change of 7.0% compared to the third quarter of 2024 and an increase of 6.7% compared to the second quarter of 2025. The production of 2.95 million tonnes of cattle carcasses, in the third quarter of 2025, consisted of an increase of 6.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and of 10.9% compared to the second quarter of 2025.

Slaughter of hogs and pigs increases in the third quarter

Slaughter of hogs and pigs added up to 15.80 million head in the third quarter of 2025, representing an increase of 5.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 4.7% compared to the second quarter of 2025. The cumulative weight of the carcasses registered 1.49 million tonnes in the third quarter of 2025, an increase of 6.1% compared to the third quarter of 2024 and 4.7% compared to the immediately previous quarter.

Chicken slaughter reaches 1.69 billion head in the third quarter

In the third quarter of 2025, 1.69 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This result was 2.8% higher than that obtained in the equivalent quarter of the previous year and 3.0% higher than that seen in the second quarter of 2025. The cumulative weight of the carcasses was 3.59 million tonnes in the third quarter of 2025. This total represents increases of 3.0% compared to the third quarter of 2024 and of 1.0% compared to the immediately previous quarter. 

Milk acquisition increases 10.3% compared to the third quarter of 2024

The acquisition of raw milk made by establishments that operate under some sort of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) in the third quarter of 2025 was 7.01 billion liters. The value corresponded to an increase of 10.3% compared to the volume recorded in the third quarter of 2024 and an increase of 7.5% compared to that obtained in the immediately previous quarter.  

In relation to the third quarter of 2024, leather acquisition grows 6.5%

The tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather – those that tan at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle rawhide per year – declared having received 11.44 million whole pieces of rawhide in the third quarter of 2025. This amount represents an increase of 8.4% compared to that recorded in the third quarter of 2024 and an increase of 6.5% compared to the immediately previous quarter. 

Hen egg production has fallen compared to the second quarter of 2025

Hen egg production was 1.23 billion dozen in the third quarter of 2025. The result represented an increase of 2.3% compared to the same period of the previous year and a drop of 0.8% compared to the second quarter of 2025.

More about the survey

On a quarterly basis, the IBGE carries out the official statistical surveys of the agricultural scenario, which are the Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter, Quarterly Survey of Milk, Quarterly Survey of Leather and Production of Hen Eggs. In order to meet requests from users to quickly access the information of the agricultural scenario, the IBGE began to release the first results of these surveys from the first quarter of 2018 onwards. These data are available nearly one month ahead of the general release of the data in the newspaper IBGE Indicators: Statistics of Livestock Production. The data can be consulted on Sidra. The next release of the complete results, related to the third quarter of 2025, will be on December 10.
