Construction prices change by 0.79% in August, with rise in materials and workforce

In August, the National Index of Civil Construction (SINAPI) changed by 0.79%. This rate is 0.48 percentage points (p.p.) above the 0.31% recorded in July. This was the second-highest change recorded this year, lower than in June (0.88%). The cumulative index over the last 12 months was 5.42%, a result above the 5.25% recorded in the previous 12 months. In August 2024, the index was 0.63%. The data was released today (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The national construction cost per square meter, which closed July at R$1,848.39, rose to R$1,863.00 in August, with R$1,064.10 relative to materials and R$798.90 to labor.

The share of materials changed by 0.50%, showing an increase in relation to the previous month (0.23%). Compared to the index for August 2024 (0.50%), the result remained the same. 

"Workforce, with several collective agreements signed during the period, changed by 1.18%, representing an increase of 0.76 percentage points from July (0.42%), and 0.37 percentage points from August 2024 (0.81%)," Augusto Oliveira, research manager, explains.

From January to August, the cumulative costs were 2.81% for materials and 5.73% for workforce. The cumulative costs over 12 months were 4.91% for materials and 6.14% for labor.

South Region Sul has biggest monthly change in August

Influenced by increases in the share of workforce in all states, the South Region recorded the highest regional change in August, 2.19%. The remaining ones had the following results: 0.73% (North), 0.36% (Northeast), 0.65% (Southeast), and 0.81% (Central-West).

In August Mato Grosso do Sul records biggest increase 

With an increase in the share of materials and a collective agreement signed in professional categories, Mato Grosso do Sul recorded the highest rate in August, 2.97%. Followed by Paraná (2.79%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.66%), and also influenced by the adjustment in the workfoce sector.
