Events boost services sector and contribute to an increase of 0.3% in May

Shows and performances taking place in April contributed to an increase of 0.3% in the sector of services from March to April. Services rendered to families, which include the activities of lodging, feeding and management of araeas for events, increased by 0.1%, having kept the positive trend observed in the previous month. 

The overall result of the index interrupted a series of three months with negative rates in a row, according to the Monthly Survey of Services, released today by the IBGE. The survey also showed increased recorded by information and communication services (0.7%) and professional and administrative services (0.2%).

“There has been an increase in lodging and feeding activities related to big events in the period, mainly Lollapalooza, in São Paulo, and Cirque du Soleil, in Rio de Janeiro”, explains the manager of the survey, Rodrigo Lobo, adding that the “music festival, especially, stands out in the comparison with April 2019”.

Against April last year, the category recorded grew 3.6%, with a cumulative 4.3% of increase in the first four months of the year.

 

Cargo transportation on a downward trend 

Transportation services faced a decrease of 0.6% in comparison with March, mainly influenced by cargo transportation, both by road and rail, besides the decrease of the revenue of companies of air transport of passengers. Against April 2018, the sector faced a decrease of 5% and accounted for the main negative contribution to the overall result of services, which fell 0.7%.

Also in terms of cumulative results in the first four-month period, transportation recorded the biggest negative influence, with -2.5%. “The decrease in the volume of cargo transportation reflects the decrease of industrial output. The ferwer goods produced, the less cargo to be transported. In the case of passenger transportation, inflation is also partially responsible for the decrease”, Rodrigo adds.
