Staying well above the 0.4% rate recorded in May, the inflation closed June at 1.26%. The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), published today by the IBGE, is the largest since January 2016, when it registered a high of 1.27%, and the highest for June since 1995 (2.26% ).

With a rate of 2.03%, the group of food and beverages was the one that most influenced the result, being responsible for 0.50 percentage points of the composition of the rate in the month. The main highlights were long-life milk (from 2.65% in May to 15.63% in June) and whole chicken (from -0.99% in May to 8.02% in June).

With a 2.48% inflation, the group of housing accounted for the second largest impact of the month, mainly influenced by electricity, which changed by 7.93%, compared with 3.53% in May. The increase was determined by the validity of a new tariff flag that added, throughout the country, a charge of R$0.05 for each kilowatt consumed and by price adjustments in Curitiba, Brasilia, Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte.

In the group of transportation, the 5.66% drop in diesel oil and 2.05% in airfare were unable to restrain the inflation, which stood at 1.58%, pushed in large part by the increases of 5.00% in gasoline and of 4.22% in ethanol.

Of the nine groups investigated by the survey, only wearing apparel, with a -0.16% index, obtained a deflation in June, while communication maintained a stability (0%). With the result, the general inflation accrued 2.60% in 2018 and 4.39% in the last twelve months.

For the calculation of the index of the month, the prices collected in the period from May 30 to June 27, 2018 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from April 28 to May 29, 2018 (base).
