[Retratos] At the sea shore

In Brazil, the large scale occupation of the coastal strip in Brazil leads to urban and environmental problems associated to the metropolises located nearby. The growing number of tourists attracted by the abundant natural beauties on the seashore, such as beaches of crystal clear water under a bright sunny sky can cause a lot of damage. That is especially true in Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo, in Rio de Janeiro, and Balneário Camboriú and Itapema, in Santa Catarina. The four municipalities have recorded significant population growth and an increase in the number of housing units for occasional use (used on weekends, vacations and related occasions). Nevertheless, despite the disapproval in some respects, tourism is also acknowledged as a fundamental element of the economy of the coastal cities we have visited. We went there to see for ourselves the impacts of tourism activity.

In the video below, photographer Warley de Souza, from Cabo Frio, and the travel agent Ronaldo Fialho, from Arraial do Cabo, tell us how it feels to see so many tourists and a striking number of real estate enterprises in places once characterized only by the presence of nature. Read the complete report at Retratos Magazine no 5
