Transportation increases in October and reduces pace of fall of services sector

According to the Monthly Survey of Services, released today by the IBGE, the segment of Transportation and mailing increased 8.4% in October compared with the same month in 2016 and reduced the pace of fall of the services sector, which stayed at 0.3%. The change was -0.8% in relation to September, whereas the cumulative index in the last 12 months stood at -3.4%.

The -0.3% change means a deceleration in the pace of fall, since the comparison of September 2017 with the same month last year stayed at -3.2%, while it stood at -2.6% in August in the same comparison.

"The sector registered a lower drop over October, though it should be highlighted that the base was quite depressed. October 2016 recorded the worst figure in the time series. We are comparing with a very low base. It may give the impression that the sector is nearly positive, but it should be seen with caution. Yet the data already begins to evidence a slow recovery, though still on the negative side", explained Roberto Saldanha, manager of the survey.

Compared with 2016, the segment of Transportation and mailing was the only one that positively contributed (2.4 p.p.) to the overall rate of -0.3%. This activity rose 8.4%, led by Land transportation (9.0%). On the other hand, this rise was offset by the drops in Information and communication services (-2.1%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (-6.4%).

"Land transportation improved this month. Yet we should remember that the comparison is with October 2016, which posted a very low volume", complements Saldanha.
