According to the Monthly Survey of Industry - Regional - PIM-PF Regional released today by the IBGE, the industrial output in São Paulo dropped 1.4% in August, after four months of growth. However, São Paulo still registers a 0.4% positive rate in the last 12 months and a 1.5% expansion between January and August.

The retraction in São Paulo can be partly explained by the high growth in the previous months. The industry in São Paulo expanded 7.1% between April and July. "This drop is mostly due to the higher level in the last months. It is a positive performance compared with August last year (6.6%). In this type of index, it is the highest positive rate since January 2013 (7.3%, compared with January 2012)", explains Rodrigo Lobo, analyst at the IBGE.

increasing, impacting slightly more the industry in São Paulo and explaining this drop over July. The harvest has been moving to the Northeast, as it exhausted in the Center-South. The producers have been orienting the production to alcohol and not to other sugarcane derivatives (refined, crystallized and VHP sugar)", adds Rodrigo.

In the August index, Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%), Pará (-0.7%), Paraná (-0.4%) and Ceará (-0.1%) also dropped compared with July this year, whereas Espírito Santo (7.5%), Bahia (4.9%), Amazonas (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (2.4%), Pernambuco (1.8%) and Goiás (0.1%) expanded their industrial activity.
