On July 5, the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) will open the pre-registration for the course Artificial Intelligence in Public Policies, class of 2024. The course aims at introducing and discussing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially Language Generative Models, in the production of evidences to formulate and assess public programs and policies.

Those interested should access the website https://ence.ibge.gov.br/index.php/trilhas/cdbdia, which provides more information about the course. The link for the pre-registration form will be available from July 5 (Friday) at 9am until July 12 at 9am. Sixty seats will be offered and the registration order will be one of the criteria to select the students, as well as the distribution by Major Region, by sex and by external and internal public.

Complete higher education is required, and knowledge and involvement with public policies, desirable. With a 30-hour workload, the course will begin on August 9 and will last five weeks, until September 6. It includes remote synchronous activities (classes and discussions) on Fridays, from 9am to 12pm, and assynchronous activities (reading and research).

Professors Paulo Jannuzzi (ENCE/IBGE) and Vicente Rocha (UFG) will be in charge of the course. They will introduce basic concepts in the field of public policies, as well as a brief history, definitions and AI tools. The following subjects will be discussed:

  • What is Public Policy: basic concepts, typology and implementation cycle/spiral.
  • Artificial Intelligence: definitions, background and field of studies.
  • Language Generative Models: characteristics and tools
  • The IAPP project and use of ChatPP in specific cases
  • Potentialities and limitations in the use of AI in Public Policies

ChatPP is an AI resource able to answer questions on the formulation and management of public programs and policies. The tool is part of the Network of Artificial Intelligence and Public Policies (IAPP), an inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary research initiative in the form of a collaborative network involving universities, study centers, research institutions and governmental offices.

Learning paths

The course Artificial Intelligence in Public Policies is part of the learning path Data Science, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (CDBDIA), an ENCE/IBGE project that will offer other courses under this subject. The first course was Introduction to Data Science, offered between May and July for those aiming at understanding the bases and applicability of data science in the real world. A third course on Big Data and Public Statistics is scheduled for this year as well. Other courses and paths are being developed and will be launched soon.
