O IBGE released, today (27), the Annual Survey of Industry – Product (PIA-Product) 2022, which investigated about 3,400 products manufactured by 33.1 thousand companies and their 39.8 thousand local branches for industrial production. Value of production of Brazilian industry in 2022 amounted to R$ 6.1 trillion, whereas net sales revenue reached R$ 5.2 trillion. Today the Institute also released the Annual Survey of Industry – Enterprise (PIA-Enterprise), whose results you can see here.
“The results of this survey are part of a context of recovery for Brazilian industry, resumption of economic increase, decrease of inflation and volatility of international prices,” explains Synthia Santana, IBGE’s manager of structural analysis.
The ten main products accounted for 23.4% of the net sales revenue in 2022, a higher percentage than in 2021 (22.9%). Crude oil, which was in the second position in the previous year, recorded an increase of 1.1 percentage points (p.p.) and became a leader in terms of revenue, with a share of 5.3% of the national total, that is R$ 274,5 billion. “The rise of oil barrel prices contributed to this scenario and caused the product reach a better position in the ranking,” Synthia explains. Diesel, as a petroleum product, was also affected and went from the third to the second position, with an increase from 2.6% in 2021 to 3.9% in 2022, with net sales revenue of R$ 200.0 billion.
Iron ore, which had been leading the ranking since 2020, fell to the third position, with 3.1%, with a drop of 2.4 p.p. from 2021. The total revenue was R$ 159.6 billion. “The loss was influenced by the fall of international prices, caused by the demand from China, which is still under the effect of interruptions in factories due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the researcher says.
The TOP10 also includes fresh or cooled beef (R$ 114.7 billion and 2.2% of participation); manure or fertilizers with Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) (R$ 102.8 billion and 2.0%); automotive gasoline (R$ 90.3 billion and 1.7%); residue from soybean oil extraction (R$ 76.1 billion and 1.5%); non-denatured ethyl alcohol for fuel purposes (R$ 67.5 billion and 1.3%); fuel oils, except diesel (R$ 67.0 billion and 1.3%); and gasoline, alcohol or biofuel engine cars, with cylinder capacity of 1,500 - 3,000 cc (R$ 60.6 billion and 1.2%).
An expanded list with 100 main products in terms of net sales revenue in 2022 the ones that rose in the ranking were potassium chlorides, which advanced 71 positions, having changed from the 135th to the 64th position; reformulated gasoline, having advanced 58 positions (from the 139th to the 81st) and harvesting machines (from the 92nd to the 43rd). The main losses were observed among Copper and its ores, which fell 32 positions and went from the 34th to the 66th place in the ranking; vinyl polychloride (PVC), which changed from 78th to the 99th position, and plastic laminates, except films (from the 74th to the 95th).
Five activities account for 56.2% of the net sales revenue of industry in 2022
In 2022, food products, with 17.3%, remained as the industrial segment accounting for the biggest share of net sales revenue. The activity has led the ranking since 2007, when CNAE 2.0 went into effect. Together, the five main industrial activities represented 56.2% of the net sales revenue of the industrial sector in 2022. The others are manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (11.9%); manufacture of chemicals (11.1%); manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (8,5%) and basic metals (7.4%).
Considering an expanded list with ten sectors, concentration reaches 77.7% of the net sales revenue, above the figure of 2021 (77.0%). The following items complete the list: extraction of oil and natural gas (5.9%); manufacture of machinery and equipment (4.8%); extraction of iron ore (4.2%); manufacture of rubber products and plastic material (3.4%); and manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products (3.2%).
In the comparison between 2021 and 2022, among the increases, what stood out was the increase of 2.2 p.p. in manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels. Extraction of oil and natural gas (1.3 p.p.) and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (0.5 p.p.) stood out. As for decreases, the biggest drop was that of extraction of iron ore (2.7 p.p.), followed by basic metals (1.1 p.p.) and manufacture of rubber products and plastic material (0.3 p.p.).
In ten years, participation of the Southeast drops and that of the Central West increases
PIA-Product also presents results of a reginal analysis that shows that, from 2013 to 2022, the Southeast was the region recording the biggest decrease in representativeness in participation in national sales revenue. The main industrial region in the country still leads, but its percentage fell from 57.8% to 55.0%.
On the other hand, the Central West recorded the biggest increase, with a change from 5.6% to 7.4%. The Northeast also increased its participation from 9.5% to 10.5%. The North changed from 6.4% to 6.6%, whereas the South went from 20.7% to 20.5%.
As for products and services, there is concentration of revenue among the main products, mainly the North and the Central West. “In the North, the main products come from the extraction of metallic minerals and the manufacture of electronic products and the Manaus Free-Trade Zone; however, the production of meat has increased in the last few years,” Synthia highlights. In 2022, the ranking of the Major Region was formed by iron ore (20.2%); fresh or cooled beef (6.6%); and mobile telephones (4.6%), which accounted for 31.4% of the sales in the major Region.
In the Central West, with 7.4% of the total national revenue, the highlights were agricultural products: fresh or cooled beef (11.9%); cake, bagasse and bran from soybean oil extraction (9.8%); and manure or fertilizers with Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) (6.7%), which, together, accounted for 28.4% of sales in the Major Region.
In the Northeast, the two main products were edible oils, except diesel (6.1%); and diesel (6.0%), which, when added, corresponded to 12.1% of the total revenue of the Major Region. The third product was gasoline, ethanol or biofuel engine cars with cylinder capacity of 1,500 - 3,000 cc, whose percentage was omitted in order to guarantee statistical confidentiality of informant’s identities.
The main products in the Southeast were crude oil (9.4%); diesel (4.1%); and iron ore (3.1%), which represented 16.6% of the industrial revenue. “That Major Region has the biggest petroleum bays in the country, in Santos and Campos, the main oil refineries and the Iron Quadrangle in Minas Gerais,” the researcher says.
In the South, the highlights came from diesel (4.2%); frozen poultry meat and giblets (2.9%); and manure or fertilizers with Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) (2.9%), which reached 10.0% of the sales revenue in that Major Region.
More about the survey
The Annual Survey of Industry – Product (PIA-Product) investigates, every year, information relative to products and services produced by national industry, having as a basis a pre-established nomenclature, the List of Industrial Products (Prodlist-Industry) elaborated by the IBGE using the MERCOSUR Common Nomenclature (NCM) and the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE 2.0). Its results are a reference for the detailed study of the composition of industrial production and the combined analysis of domestic production flows and with the foreign trade of industrial products.
