Slaughter of hogs and pigs up in Q2 of 2020 reaching 12 million animals

Slaughter of hogs and pigs grew 1.6% in Q2 2020 according to the first results of Livestock Statistics

Livestock production in Brazil fell in the slaughter of cattle and chickens in the second quarter of 2020. Only the slaughter of hogs and pigs grew, both in comparison with the first quarter of 2020 and in the comparison with the second quarter of 2019.

In comparison with the same period last year, the slaughter of cattle and chickens decreased, respectively,  9.7% and 1.6%, while the slaughter of hogs and pigs increased 5.9%. Against the previous quarter, the slaughter of cattle and chicken decreased 1.2% and 7.2%, whereas the slaughter of hogs and pigs also increased in this comparison, 1.6%.

Data are from the first results from the Statistics of Livestock Production for the second quarter of 2020, released today (13) by the IBGE. The definitive result will be released on September 10.

The preliminary survey points out the slaughter of 12.07 million head of hogs and pigs. The cumulative weight of carcasses recorded 1.10 million tonnes with a high of 8.2% in relation to the second quarter of 2019. In comparison with the previous quarter, it increased 3.2%.

According to the survey, 7.17 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some kind of health inspection service. Regarding cattle carcasses, there were 1.85 million tonnes, a number that represents a fall of 6.6% in relation to the same quarter previous year and an increase of 0.5% in relation to the first quarter of 2020.

The Brazilian livestock also slaughtered, according to the survey, 1.40 million head of chicken in the second quarter of 2020. The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.21 million tonnes, which represents -4.0% in relation to the second quarter of 2019 and -7.7% against the first quarter of 2020.

Acquisition of milk and leather fall, production of eggs grows

The survey shows that the acquisition of raw milk by establishments that work under some kind of health inspection service (federal, state or municipal) was 5.69 billion liters in the second quarter of 2020. This number means a reduction of 2.9% in comparison to the second quarter of 2019 and a decrease of 9.7% against the previous quarter.

The first results in the Quarterly Survey of Leather point out tanneries reported having 7.25 million of rawhide pieces in the second quarter of 2020, an amount that represents a fall of 13.7% in comparison to the second quarter of 2019 and a reduction of 3.6% in relation to the previous quarter. The survey investigates only the tanneries that tan at least 5 thousand whole units of raw cowhide per year.

Nevertheless, the production of hen eggs was 965.41 million dozen in the second quarter of 2020. This amount shows stability against the production in the last quarter and an increase of 1.9% in relation to the same quarter of 2019.
