Industrial output closes 2018 with increase in 11 areas surveyed

The Survey of Regional Industry, released today by the IBGE, recorded an increase in 11 of the 15 areas surveyed in 2018. That was the second best regional performance in the last six years, with a result below that of 2017, which had positive rates in 12 locations.
Pará (9.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (5.5%) and Amazonas (5.2%) recorded the biggest increases in the year, whereas Goiás (-4.5%), Minas Gerais (-1%) and Espírito Santo (-0.9%) recorded the main decreases. São Paulo, which accounts for about 34% of the indutrial output in the country, had an increase of 0.8%.
“In most locations with positive rates, there was influence of the sectors of capital goods and durable consumer goods. São Paulo was mainly influenced by the increased output of vehicles, trailers and trucks. Nevertheless, the state decelerated in the second semester and cosed the year below the national average”, says Bernardo Almeida, technician in charge of the survey.
Industry of Paraná has best performance for the third year in a row
With an increase of 9.6% in 2018, the industry of Paraná recorded, for the third consecutive year, the biggest result among the areas surveyed and accounted for the biggest positive cumulative contribution to national industry in the year.
According to Almeida, most of th e state performance is predominant in mining and quarrying industry, mainly in the sector of extraction of rion ore. “In the last few years, Pará has received investments in this activity. Today, mining and quarrying already accounts for about 80% of the state industry”.
Against November 2018, seven areas had positive rates in December. Goiás, with 10.5%, Rio de Janeiro, 4.3%, and Amazonas, 4%, accounted for the biggest increases in the month. Pernambuco, -5.1%, Northeast Region, -4.9%, and Rio Grande do Sul, -3.6%, recorded the main decreases. Against figures in December 2017, nine areas recorded decreases.
