In September, retail sales recorded a decrease of 1.3%, after an increase of 2.0% against the August rate. Decrease was observed in six of the eight activities surveyed by the Monthly Survey Trade, released today by the IBGE.

The biggest impact came from the decrease of 1.2% in the sales of hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco. According to the manager of the survey, Isabella Nunes, decrease was stimulated by the end of deflation of food prices: “inflation was -0.7 in July, -0.6 in August, and stable in September”.

Isabella highlights the stability of retail trade in comparison with the figure in September last year (0.1%), when the labor market started a process of recovery. “It was a specially significant month, after two years of recession, during which families had to cut down on expenses and postpone their purchases”, recalls Isabella.

“In addition to that, the release of FGTS (Guaranteed Severance Fund) resources allowed many persons to pay their debts and have more access to consumption practices. That led to a very high basis for comparison”, the researcher explains.
