The services sector kept stable (0,1%) from January to February, but had decrease of -2.2% in the comparison with February 2017, accumulating -1.8% in the first two months of the year. Those are the results of the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), released today the IBGE.

Among the highlights of the survey, Services Rendered to Families had their fifth consecutive negative rate in comparison with the previous month (seasonally-adjusted series, accumulating losses of -4.8% in the period. The activity group decreased by -0.8% from January to February and -5.2% in relation to February 2017.

"The restaurants, snack bars and pubs make up 45% of this group of activities," explains the research manager, Rodrigo Lobo. "Accomodation services, which represent 25% of the group, performed positively in recent months, but they did not have enough weight to offset the recurrent falls in the food sector," he adds.

Another group with a negative impact in the volume of the sector was that of Information and Communication Services, led by telecommunications, which has also been coping with consecutive drops. “Big telephony enterpirses have been facing problems”, declares Rodrigo Lobo. “Some are under judicial reorganization and others have merged with pay-TV and internet companies trying to stay in the market. That has reflected on the group as a whole," he adds.
