Services Sector changes 0.1% in February

In February 2018, the volume of services in Brazil recorded a positive change of 0.1% compared to January, in the seasonally-adjusted series. In the non-adjusted series, in relation to February 2017, the volume of services fell (-2.2%). As a result, the volume of services accumulated a decrease of 1.8% in the year. The cumulative index in the last twelve months also became negative (-2.4%) in February 2018.

Among the activities, in relation to January (seasonally adjusted series), there was only increase in professional, administrative and complementary services (1.7%). The four other activities showed a decline: services rendered to families (-0.8%), information and communication services (-0.6%), transportation, support services to transportion and mailing activities (-0.3%) and other services (-0.7%). In relation to February 2017, there were two positive changes: other services (1.7%) and transportation, support services to transportion and mailing activities (0.6%). The three falls were in services rendered to families (-5.2%), information and communication services (-4.9%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.6%).

The index of tourism activities declined in both comparisons: -3.4% in relation to January and -5.2% in comparison with February 2017. The support material of the Monthly Survey of Survices (PMS) is on the right of this page.

The services sector was positive again in February 2018 (0.1%), after dropping 1.9% in January, when it almost offset the cumulative gain in the last two months of 2017 (2.0%). The slight increase in the volume of services was concentrated both in terms of sectors and regions. Just one of the five activities and fifteen of the twenty-seven Brazilian states recorded positive rates in the month.

The positive change of volume of services (0.1%) in February was exclusively due to professional, administrative and complementary services (1.7%). The other activities retrieved: services rendered to families (-0.8%), information and communication services (-0.6%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.3%) and other services (-0.7%).

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the index of the quarterly moving average for the total volume of services went back 0.2% in the quarter ended in February 2018 over the previous month's level, interrupting, thus, the upward trend started in October last year.

Among the sectors, also in relation to the movement of this index on margin, the services rendered to families (-1.3%) recorded the sharpest decrease in this month and kept the predominant negative behavior since August 2017. The other segments that also dropped in February were information and communication services (-0.6%) and transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.3%).

Conversely, other services (1.1%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) registered the positive rates in February 2018.

In relation to February 2017, the volume of the services sector decreased 2.2% in February 2018, with negative results in three of the five activities surveyed and 51.2% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, the information and communication services (-4.9%) were the ones that had negative impacts on the global index.

On the other hand, still comparing with February 2017, the two activities that had increase in the volume of services were: transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.6%) and other services (1.5%).

In the cumulative index from January to February 2018, over the same period a year ago, the services sector presented decrease of 1.8%, with negative rates in there of the five activities surveyed and 56.0% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, information and communication services (-4.9%) exerted the main negative impact on the overall index. The other negative influences came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.6%), services rendered to families (-4.0%).

However, the positive impacts of the first two months of the year came from Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (2.2%) and other services (1.6%).

RESULTS BY REGION

Regionally, 15 of the 27 states had advance in the volume of services in February, in relation to January, in the seasonally adjusted series. São Paulo, which represents nearly 43% of all volume of services generated in Brazil, remained unchanged (0.0%) in February 2018, contributing for the national index to remain close to stability as well.

In the places, the positive highlights this month were: Paraná (2.0%); Rio de Janeiro (0.5%), Santa Catarina (0.5%); Pará (1.4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (1.5%). The main negative influences were from Bahia (-9.0%), Ceará (-16.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%) and Minas Gerais (-0.8%).

Compared to February 2017, the decrease in the volume of services in Brazil (-2.2%) was followed by 22 of the 27 Federation Units. The most important drops were: Rio de Janeiro (-2.6%), São Paulo (-0.7%), Bahia (-8.6%), Minas Gerais (-3.5%), Federal District (-8.6%) and Ceará (-12.7%). On the other hand, the most relevant expansion for the formation of the national index came from Paraná (2.7%).

In the cumulative index of the year, over the same period in the previous year, 23 of the 27 Federation Units had negative rates. The strongest drops occurred in Rio Grande do Norte (-11.5%), Piauí (-10.7%), Ceará (-9.4%), Tocantins (-8.9%), Federal District (-8.8%) and Pará (-8.1%). Conversely, the greatest high was in Mato Grosso (2.9%), whereas São Paulo had no change (0.0%) in the cumulative index of the first two months of 2018.

SPECIAL AGGREGATE OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The index of Tourism activities dropped 4.0% in relation to January 2018. Eleven of the twelve Federation Units followed the downward trend, with a highlight to São Paulo (-2.3%), Bahia (-9.9%), Minas Gerais (-8.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.3%). On the other hand, the Federal District (0.9%) recorded the only positive rate in the month.

In the comparison with February 2017, the volume of tourism activities decreased 5.2% in Brazil, after having stood stable in January (0.0%). In regional terms, nine of the twelve states where the indicator is investigated showed decease in the services related to tourism, with a highlight to São Paulo (-5.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (-7.9), which together account for 50% of the revenue of services related to the tourism activities in Brazil.
