The only activity down in August in the comparison with July, the sector of services rendered to families (-4.8%) was mainly to blame for the 1% drop registered in the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), released today by the IBGE. The segment had been having a three-consecutive-month period of highs, but it was affected by the sector of Lodging and food services, which fell 7.5% in the month. In the overall index, the cumulative rate in the year stayed at -3.8% and, in 12 months, at -4.5%.
establishments such as restaurants, bars and hotels had been on the rise for four month in a row, but August interrupted it. "It was a month of low consumption. There was a widespread drop in the consumption of those services. It was something we could see in all Federation Units", explains PMS manager, Roberto Saldanha.
Other decreases have also contributed to the drop of the overall index: audiovisual, editing and news agency services (-2%), information technology (-1.6%), land transportation (-1.1%), storage services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-0.7%) and telecommunications (-0.2%).
The positive highlights in August were air transportation (5.3%) and waterway transportation (3.9%), as well as administrative and complementary services (1.5%). other services rendered to families - laundry, beauty parlor, fitness centers, among others - remained statistically stable, in turn, with a change of 0.1% in August.
