The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released this Friday (12) an indicator on the innovation efforts of Brazilian companies with 100 or more employed persons in mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries for 2023. The indicator "Internal Expenditure on Business Research and Development in relation to Revenue," which combines data from the Annual Survey of Industry (PIA ENTERPRISE) and the 2023 Semiannual PINTEC: Basic Indicators, is an IBGE survey conducted in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI)  and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

"The release for the second consecutive year of this important indicator of R&D expenditure intensity by medium-sized and large-sized industrial companies will enable adjustments in public policies and business strategies, in a way as to strengthen the national statistical system for science, technology, and innovation," said Fernanda Vilhena, manager of Structural and Thematic Analysis at IBGE.

The indicator shows that, in 2023, industrial companies with 100 or more employed persons invested 0.70% of their net sales revenue in Research and Development (R&D), amounting to R$38.3 billion. In 2022, this figure was 0.65% (R$36.9 billion).

The sectoral highlights, with a rate above the average for the industry overall, were: Manufacture of pharmaceuticals (4.06%), Manufacture of other transportation equipment (2.46%), Manufacture of computer equipment, electronic and optical products (1.71%), Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (1.31%), Manufacture of miscellaneous products (0.91%), Manufacture of electric machines, appliances and materials (0.90%), Manufacture of rubber and plastic products (0.81%), Manufacture of machinery and equipment (0.72%) and Preparation of leather and manufacture of leather articles, travel goods and footwear (0.69%).

Manufacture of beverages (0.06%), Maintenance, repair, and installation of machinery and equipment (0.11%), and Manufacture of food products (0.19%) had the lowest proportion of these expenditures relative to RLV.

In 2023, companies with 500 or more employed persons  invested 0.74% of their net sales revenue in internal R&D. Companies with 100 to 249 and 250 to 499 employed persons invested less in innovation, 0.54% and 0.52%, respectively.

The R&D investment indicator is obtained by dividing internal R&D expenditures by the companies' revenue. Revenue data refer to net sales revenue obtained in the PIA-Enterprise (Company Information System).

More about the survey

The Survey of Innovation - PINTEC, which started in 2000, with national results for the period  1998-2000, following the guidelines set by the Oslo Manual, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development - OCDE, aiming at the international comparability of information. PINTEC provides information for the construction of sectoral, regional and national indicators of innovation activities, having as a focus the activities of Mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries, as well as of the sectors of Electricity and gas and Selected services.

A new survey, based on PINREC, started in 2021, but with different samples, forms of collection and content. This survey, the Semiannual Survey of Innovation - Semiannual PINTEC, the result of a partnership with the Brazilian Agency of Industrial Development - ABDI and the Federal university of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ, has the objective of providing indicators on innovation abd related topics, in a more timely way than the traditional PINTEC. Semiannual PINTEC Semestral provides information for the construction of sectoral and national indicators of innovation activities of Brazilian companies with 100 employed persons and over.
