Workshops open IBGE schedule at 78th SBPC Annual Meeting

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) began its participation in the 78th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) this Monday (27). Among the opening activities of the Institute's programming, the Survey of Innovation (PINTEC) was the theme of one of the workshops held during the event.
The activity was led by Flávio Peixoto, IBGE manager of Thematic Surveys, who presented the survey trajectory, the methodological changes implemented in the 2025 edition and the main structural indicators produced by the survey. The workshop is part of the scientific dissemination program promoted by the IBGE.
During the presentation, Peixoto explained that PINTEC is going through a new phase after seven editions of the structural survey, carried out since the beginning of the 2000s. According to him, the survey arose from a demand from the then Ministry of Science and Technology, at a time when the concept of innovation itself was still little known in Brazil.
“Here we are quickly presenting the history of PINTEC and what new PINTEC 2025 brings, survey that is in the field now. Back then, innovation was a rare phenomenon, so the sample looked for a potentially innovative company. Now that this is something more widespread, the rare phenomenon is investment in R&D (Research and Development),” highlighted the manager.
The workshop aroused the interest of the participants. Engineering student Luciana de Oliveira, aged 22, said she was surprised by one of the results shown on the innovation scenario in Brazil.
“It is very interesting to know that Amazonas is the most innovative state in Brazil, even though, in terms of spending, São Paulo is the biggest one. Incredible because, sometimes, we forget that there is an important industrial hub there, outside the most industrialized region of Brazil,” commented her.
In addition to presenting the historical evolution of PINTEC, the workshop addressed indicators produced by the survey and methodological aspects of the 2025 edition.
The 78th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) began this Sunday (26), after an opening ceremony held in the auditorium of the Cantareira Innovation District, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and continues until August 1st, with most of the activities concentrated on the Gragoatá campus, in Niterói (RJ).
The event brings together representatives of the scientific community, students and research institutions. The program includes the presentation of scientific studies, in addition to the discussion and presentation of public policies in the areas of science, technology and innovation. This year's meeting has the theme “Science for All: Sovereignty, Development and Inclusion.”
Schedule for the next few days
On Tuesday (28), activities begin at 10 am with a new presentation about the IBGE's international presence, this time led by João Nizato. At 11 am and again at 3 pm, Juliana Paiva presents PEERS, a survey focused on the impacts of the floods that occurred in Rio Grande do Sul in 2024. Among these activities, at 1 pm, Luciana Alves teaches the workshop on the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF).
On Wednesday (29), João Antônio Caminada addresses the IBGE's international presence on two occasions, at 10 am and 2 pm. Between these presentations, at 11 am, Vando da Paz Nascimento and Juliana Souza de Queiroz lead a workshop on the 12th Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture, highlighting the main aspects of the census operation.
On Thursday (30), Carlos Lessa will once again present the Institute's international actions at 10 am and 2 pm. At 11 am, Flávio Peixoto leads the workshop on the Survey of Innovation (2025 PINTEC), covering the evolution of the survey and its new methodology. Closing the day's program, at 4 pm, Roberto Teixeira Luz returns to present the workshop on monitoring sea level rise and the Brazilian Geodetic System.
On Friday (31), the last day of activities, Patrícia Santos opens the program at 10 am with a presentation on IBGE's international presence. At 11 am, Maria Clara Celestino teaches the workshop on Traditional Peoples and Communities in the 12th Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture. At 1 pm, she returns to present the methodology of the National Census of Population Experiencing Homelessness and, at 3 pm, she ends the program with the workshop dedicated to the 2022 Population Census publications aimed at Traditional Peoples and Communities.
