The Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso do Sul held this Wednesday (10) a public hearing in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). With the theme “Portraits of a Nation in Motion: Brazilian Identity and the Singularity of Mato Grosso do Sul under the Magnifier of 90 Years of the IBGE,” the audience highlighted the relevance of the Institute for the development of the state.
The open debate focused on the production of statistical data and the construction of public policies and counted with the open participation of the population. Throughout the afternoon, the importance of the IBGE surveys for Mato Grosso society was highlighted.
State representative Hashioka (Republicans), proponent of the hearing, defended the public value of the data produced by the IBGE for a series of fronts: the production of public policies, democratic debate, development, economic growth and environmental preservation.
“In Mato Grosso do Sul, the IBGE information is essential for guiding investments, measuring population demands, distributing public resources and planning actions that promote the sustainable development of our cities and regions. As an engineer and public figure, I have always argued that good decisions need to be based on accurate information,” told him.
For Juliana Paracampos, chief of staff at the Mato Grosso do Sul Labor Foundation (Funtrab), the dynamic and constant monitoring of the state's economic data is possible thanks to the planning and expertise of the IBGE.
“For us, who work directly with labor, employment and income policies, the IBGE is an indispensable reference,” told her, remembering that data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad) support the analyses by Funtrab and the Mato Grosso do Sul Labor Observatory.
Estevan Risso Campêlo, Information Technology manager at the Municipal Environment and Urban Planning Agency (Planurb), made a point of highlighting the support that the IBGE gives to the planning policies of the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul. “Campo Grande only has this level of development that we were able to provide thanks to this partnership with the IBGE,” stated him.
The executive secretary of Strategic Management and Municipalism at Segov-MS, Thaner Castro Nogueira, made an emphatic defense of the strengthening of Brazilian public institutions, essential for development. “We can shed light on the production of public policies through the work of you (IBGE officials). In a state like ours, where we have no other institution, having the IBGE as support is really fundamental so that we have somewhere to look for data,” commented him, highlighting that we are in an age of misinformation, in which reliable data is fundamental.
At the ceremony, the president of the IBGE, Márcio Pochmann, considered that, although they have different functions, the IBGE and the Legislative Assembly have a combined work, since statistics are the basis for public policies founded by laws. “In this house, law makers, representatives of the people of the state, are responsible for saying what the state should be like, what reality should be like.... On the other hand, the IBGE is a state institution, and its job is to say what reality is, to portray reality,” explained him.
In a Federation Unit that has been in existence for less time than the IBGE, the portrait of reality takes on even more unique contours. This is what the state superintendent of the IBGE in Mato Grosso do Sul, Mário Alexandre de Pinna Frazeto, considered, “The IBGE accompanied the economic, social and territorial transformation of the state. It was the first federative office to be set up here and has been accompanying the state since its foundation,” stated him.
In recognition of his participation in the hearing, the president of the IBGE received from representative Hashioka, an engraving of a goldfish, by the artist from Mato Grosso do Sul Isaac de Oliveira. The goldfish is considered the king of rivers and of the Pantanal. The superintendent of the IBGE in the state, on the other hand, received the congratulatory motion on behalf of the IBGE.
The Choir from Unapi (Open University to Old Persons), from the UFMS, made a special performance at the ceremony, singing the songs Chalana, Tocando em Frente and Trem do Pantanal, classics from the national songbook that allude to the Pantanal and the culture of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Public defender Danilo Hamano Silveira Campos, representing the Public Defender's Office of Mato Grosso do Sul and IBGE´s technicians and officials in the state also participated in the public hearing.
Tributes in other states
In addition to Mato Grosso do Sul, the IBGE has already been honored in the legislative assemblies of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraná, Pará and Sergipe.
