The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) ended the year 2025 spending 98.91% of its budget. With the increase in the resources allocated to the IBGE, the organization was able to pay off all its expenses planned for the year and resume long-term planning for its main surveys.

The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, highlighted that the approved budget and the budget supplement, achieved in 2025, were decisive in ensuring the full operation of the Institute: “The significant increase in the 2025 budget granted the IBGE the necessary public resources to cover its expenses and, above all, further strengthen the institutional mission of complete, current and reliable surveys for Brazil.”

According to Pochmann, the budget reinforcement allowed not only the funding of essential activities, such as systems maintenance, field operations logistics and data processing, but also the reorganization of technical teams involved in major structuring surveys.

For 2026, the budget approved by the Federal Government for discretionary expenses is R$934,330,427, which will open space for the expansion of strategic projects, technological modernization and greater integration between statistical and geospatial bases.

IBGE's Executive Director, Flávia Vinhaes, stated that the approved budget strengthens the Institute's operational capacity and allows it to recover initiatives that had been slowed down.

“Compared to the budget allocation approved for 2025, which was around 250 million, not counting personnel supplementation and payroll, we will have a significant expansion of resources due to the 12th Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture in 2026. This way we will be able to modernize the infrastructure that serves this survey, benefiting the entire institution,” explained her.

With the combination of balanced accounts in 2025 and the expansion of resources planned for 2026, the IBGE projects significant advances in the quality and timeliness of national statistics — fundamental for guiding public policies, private investments and national development planning. Among the highlights for this year are the 12th Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture; the Census of the Homeless Population and the Census of Brazilians Abroad.
