The industrial output retreated in ten out of 15 places surveyed by the IBGE in February over January 2021. The negative figure was leveraged by the performance of São Paulo (-1.3%), due to the reduction in the production of the sectors of food and petroleum products. After nine months of growth, the national industry fell 0.7% this month. These are the results of the Regional Monthly Industrial Survey - Regional PIM, released today (8) by the IBGE.

"Ranked in the second position in terms of influence, Pará dropped 7.4%, mostly due to the mining industry," explains Bernardo Almeida, manager of the survey. Ceará (-7.7%) and Bahia (-5.8%) also retracted sharply between January and February 2021.

On the positive side, Rio de Janeiro was the major influence, growing 1.9% – the fourth consecutive positive rate for its industry. "The cumulative gain was of 5.4% in these four months of rises," adds Almeida. This month, the growth was influenced by the sectors of basic metals and motor vehicles.

Mato Grosso registered the second biggest positive influence on the national result, as well as the highest figure in absolute terms (7.3%). The food sector explains the good figures from Mato Grosso.

Compared with February 2020, the national industry grew 0.4%, rising in five out of 15 places surveyed. "Having risen 4.4%, São Paulo once again stood out as the major influence, leveraged by the sectors of petroleum products and machinery and equipment," clarifies the technician. "It is worth mentioning that from 18 activities surveyed in São Paulo, 12 grew in the comparison between February 2021 and the same month last year."

In this same comparison, the second biggest influence came from Rio Grande do Sul (rise of 7.9%), due to the good performance in the sector of machinery and equipment (especially harvesters and agricultural tractors).

Bahia was the major influence on the negative side: drop of 20.9%, the most intense for Bahia since May 2020, when it recorded -21.4%. "The drop in the production of vehicles and car pieces explains, to a large extent, this result, justified by the shutdown of a car manufacturer in Bahia," stresses Almeida. The second negative influence was again the industry of Pará (-11.4%), impacted by the decreasing output of iron ore.

Since the 1970s, the Regional Monthly Industrial Survey - Physical Production produces short-term indicators about the behavior of the real products in the mining and manufacturing industries. It brings, on a monthly basis, indexes for 14 Federation Units, whose share is, at minimum, 1% of the industrial gross value added, as well as for the Northeast Region as a whole. The survey also brings results for Amazonas, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.
