Cars and trucks hold back industry in June, speed up in long term

Despite the stability registered by the national industry in June after two months of positive changes, half the activities surveyed recorded negative figures compared with May. This is shown in the Monthly Survey of Industry, released today by the IBGE. The deceleration between the two months was the result of drops in motor vehicles (-3.9%), petroleum products (-1.7%) and pharmaceuticals (-9.2%).

In the long term, the car industry has been recording positive figures, both in the comparison with last year and in the cumulative index in the first semester this year. "The manufacture of cars, trucks and bodies retracted in terms of the domestic demand, though a successful search for foreign markets has been helping to decrease the stocks", explains André Macedo, manager of the survey, for whom exports helped to sustain the production in the last months. "It is also important to remind that the level in 2016 was marked by significant losses in this sector, producing a lower comparison basis and, consequently, a positive change", concludes him.
