The IBGE will release the book Redes Sociais do Urbano Brasileiro (Social Networks of the Brazilian Urban) on April 29, Monday, at 6 PM, at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). The publication is a facsimile edition of the Pedro Pinchas Geiger´s work Evolução da Rêde Urbana Brasileira (Evolution of the Brazilian Urban Network), originally published in 1963 and sold out for many years. The release celebrates the centenary of the author in 2023 as well.

Having joined the IBGE in 1942, Geiger was one of the major researchers of the first generation of the National Council of Geography (CNG). Then he stood out as one of the references of the Brazilian and IBGE´s geography, where he worked for more than 40 years. Having produced nearly 70 titles among books and articles in trade journals, currently Pedro Geiger integrates GeoBrasil study group, an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional group that researches and debates Brazil, certified by UERJ.

Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, highlights that “the centenary of Pedro Pinchas Geiger is an opportunity to celebrate and recall. Having hit this milestone, we can pay a tribute to the life, career and legacy of an IBGEan who influenced generations of researchers within and outside the IBGE. It is also a moment to revisit his contribution to the Brazilian geography, especially in the areas of Urban and Regional Geography, highlighting the relevance of his intellectual production.”

His original work Evolução da Rêde Urbana Brasileira was published by the former Brazilian Research Center and later by the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP). To produce the facsimile edition, the IBGE was supported both by the author and INEP, who promptly authorized the project.

On April 29, UERJ will grant the title of Honorary Doctor to Pedro Geiger in a ceremony at 5 PM at the Ecumenical Chapel of the Maracanã campus. At 6 PM, the book Redes Sociais do Urbano Brasileiro will be released.

The event will be broadcast by the Digital IBGE (ibge.gov.br) and through social media.
