Food products become cheaper and help restrain inflation

With a 12.41% decrease in June, tomatoes were quite responsible for the downturn of the Extended National Consumer Price Index 15. The IPCA 15 of June stood at 0.16%, below May's result of 0.24%. In 2017, the price of tomatoes changed considerably (18.22%). In January, there was decrease of 0.29%. But in April, the product increased 30.79%. Besides tomatoes, fruits (-7.20%), soybean oil (-3.85%), fishery (-2.93%) and rice (-1.70%) also became cheaper.

If, on the one hand, food became cheaper,  on the other hand, housing was on the rise. The same index reveals that the housing group increased 0.93%, on average. Electricity bills were the main responsible for that, since they were, on average, up 2.24%

The IPCA-15 is an indicator calculated by the IBGE to measure the inflation between the second half of a month and the first half of the reference month. The indicator comprises families with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages living in the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, as well as Brasília and Goiânia.
