The day IBGE celebrates its 81st anniversary, May 29. Not by chance the same date has been chosen for the launch of the IBGE News Agency, a portal designed to be an advance towards the democratic dissemination of public statistics and the exercise of citizenship, as stated in the mission statement of the Institute. With the slogan “News by those who produce information”, the Agency has a multidisciplinary team of journalists, designers and photographers engaged in the production of multimedia content in the segments of Digital Journalism, Image and Design, Audiovisual Services, Magazine, Social Media and Press.

Since the end of the 1990’s, the information produced by the IBGE has been presented mainly on the IBGE website and by other means of communication. The media has been an important partner in the dissemination of surveys, but it is not able possible to produce news using the combination of data and the geographic subdivisions made available in the surveys. Many times users do not know IBGE surveys or cannot access them directly from the website.

Because of that, the Agency will coordinate its several activities in order to turn data into information. The sector of Digital Journalism, for instance, will have the challenge of translating statistical information in order to facilitate understanding by the public. Other important aspects of the survey will be treated, for example, data collection and sampling, which are not often approached by the external press.

Similarly to the other IBGE projects and actions, the IBGE News agency will follow directives established in the Integrated Communication Policy of the Institution. The document states that it is of fundamental importance for a democratic society to promote the relationship of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Powers with the academic community, with national and international research institutes, with the press and with society in general.

Raquel Paiva, Professor of the Communication School and coordinator of the Laboratory of Community Communication of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), believes the News Agency will give society the chance of receiving information produced by the IBGE straight from the source.
