The IBGE Ecological Reserve, located in the Federal District, was officially categorized as Roncador Ecological Station. The change was established by ICMBio Ordinance no. 2,985, of June 29, 2026, published by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), which establishes that the IBGE Ecological Reserve will be renamed Roncador Ecological Station, integrating the group of Full Protection Units of the National System of Nature Conservation Units (SNUC).

With an area of approximately 1,389 hectares, the unit was created on December 22, 1975 and it is traditionally used for environmental and scientific research by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), maintaining its ownership under the responsibility of the Institute.

The new category maintains the area destined for the conservation of the Cerrado's biodiversity and the carrying out of scientific research on the biome. According to the ordinance, the Roncador Ecological Station's main objectives will be to preserve the region's natural ecosystems and promote scientific research, as provided for in the legislation that regulates the Brazilian conservation units.

Among the responsibilities of the new unit are the conservation of the Cerrado's environmental heritage and acting as a center for studies on biodiversity, environmental threats and impacts caused by human action, in accordance with the objectives defined for ecological stations in the environmental legislation.

The Roncador Ecological Station area is located close to the Brasília Botanical Garden and the Água Limpa Farm of the University of Brasília (UnB).

Its limits were defined based on satellite images, cartographic data from the IBGE and references from the Brazilian Geodetic System. The management of the unit will be carried out in an integrated manner between the IBGE and ICMBio, according to a cooperation instrument to be formalized between the institutions.
