The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), through its State Superintendency in Pará and the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), will launch the “Inverted World Map — Pará at the Center of the World” this Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 8:00 AM, in the outdoor area of the Benedito Nunes Convention Center at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).

The initiative is part of the COP30 activities and proposes a cartographic reinterpretation that places the state of Pará at the center of the planet, as a symbol of its leading role in the Amazônia Biome and in the global debate on climate change.

The event will be attended by the IBGE state superintendent in Pará, Rony Helder Nogueira Cordeiro, as well as representatives from the Federal University of Pará, the State Government, the Municipality of Belém, and the Historical and Geographical Institute of Pará (IHGP).

“The launch of the inverted world map – Pará at the center of the world – invites everyone to reconsider the way we see the planet. By placing Pará at the center of the map, we highlight not only a new geographical perspective, but also a symbolic one – which values the leading role of the Amazônia and of its peoples in global discussions about the future of the environment. This inversion reminds us that our view of the world can (and should) change, and emphasizes the importance of different territories and realities in the construction of a more balanced and sustainable planet.”

The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, also praised the initiative. “The inversion of the world map with Belém and Brazil at the center is also a proactive act of cognitive decolonization by the IBGE. It means that the way space is represented is deeply connected to the leading role of COP 30.”

The map download will be soon available on the IBGE website.

Casa Brasil IBGE has nine thematic areas

Casa Brasil IBGE COP, inaugurated on January 27, 2025, is located in Belém, at the facilities of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). By COP30 in November 2025, the branch is expected to have opened an exhibition dedicated to memory and technology, the basis of the Casa Brasil IBGE project.

From this space, the IBGE seeks to bring society closer to the work carried out by the Institute, as well as to promote in-person and remote activities such as courses, workshops, and postgraduate programs, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of using information and how it can contribute to monitoring projects and formulating specific public policies. Also, the Institute intends to host national and international events and announcements, especially activities related to the COP, using data from IBGE surveys and indicators.

The environment, which combines technology, interactivity, and accessibility, features physical and digital resources, an interactive information stand, a computer for search, and various dissemination products from the vast digital collection of the IBGE, which comprises one trillion variables and 1.5 billion data points across its platforms.
