Today, Tuesday (28), the IBGE launched the 32nd edition of one of its most traditional publications: Brazil in Figures. The launch event was held at the auditorium of Ricardo Brennand Institute, in Recife (PE) and streamed live on the Institute’s social media channels and on Digital IBGE.

The event was hosted by the coordinator general of CDDI CCS, Daniel Castro, and the first speaker was the IBGE superintendent in Pernambuco. Gliner Alencar recalled that the IBGE is recognized as a producer of sociodemographic data, especially of the Census, and of geoscientific information. He mentioned that “besides, the Institute works on the preservation of culture, art and memory. And that Brazil in Figures comes to gather research and art".

Nara Galvão spoke on behalf of Ricardo Brennand Institute about the feeling of being honored for the promotion of the Institute and its collection. She highlighted the election of the museum as the best in South America for three times and informed it receives about 200 thousand visitors every year. She thanked the IBGE for the partnership and reinforced her belief that can bring a lot to the Institute, as she also invited all the participants to pay a visit to the museum and see its rich collection.

Isabela Torres was the next one to speak and, as coordinator of the Project, gave details about the production process and about some characteristics of the publication. She mentioned the importance of a bilingual edition and thanked all the partners and work teams engaged in the production and promotion of the publication.

The movement aiming at the development of the Brazilian Northeast was the central theme of the talk delivered by the superintendent of SUDENE, Danilo Cabral, who highlighted the value of northeastern culture and the opportunities that Major Region has brought to the local population and to the country. The launch of Brazil in Figures reinforces “the importance of thinking, formulating and planning a Northeast for today, tomorrow and many year’s time. Planning does not take place without information, without data that can give us the possibility of making more assertive decisions,” he reinforced.

Fabrício Marques followed the same line of thought and considers Brazil in Figures as a central publication, as “without information or data, without an institution as respected as the IBGE, we would not have come here. Without planning, figures and information, the Northeast would not have advanced the way it did,” he concluded.

The following talk was delivered by Marcos Gonçalves, who spoke on behalf of the president of BNB. He remarked that Brazil in Figures is a source of data, a reference upon which projects, public policies can be based upon and help reduce inequalities. He also highlighted that "the reliability of data, the respect of each IBGE employee for their work and commitment to the best way possible of portraying Brazil in its essence as fairly as possible."

Responsible for the last speech, the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, spoke about the amount of information the IBGE deals with to fulfil its mission and its capacity of analysis. Added to that was the challenge posed by the Digital Era, which reaffirms the IBGE produces precise information for anyone who wants to know our country better. "Besides, we provide information that can change our country. To know Where to go, we need to know Where we are. And this book shows us that."

After the talks of each participant, Daniel Castro announced a new project: the publication Northeast in Figures. The work, which will strengthen the partnership with Banco do Nordeste and SUDENE, the work will be organized by a work group from the IBGE and will be one of the actions to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Institute.

At the end of the event, made an invitation for the 15th edition of the Brazil in Figures Seminar, to be held on January 29 from 10 am to 5 pm, at Casa Brasil IBGE SUDENE, also located in the capital of Pernambuco. The Seminar will have as main guests the authors of chapters of the publication and technicians from the IBGE.
