In Brasília, IBGE proceeds with international insertion process by means of cooperation agreement and partnerships

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) participated, in Brasília (DF) of two events on May 9 and 10, with the objective of expanding the Institute’s international insertion and strengthen the partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). On the 9th, president Marcio Pochmann and the manager of International Relations, Roberto Sant’Anna, attended, on behalf of the Institute, the event for signature of a cooperation agreement between the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the UNFPA, and for the recreation of the National Commission for Population and Development (CNPD), which has the IBGE as a supporting institution, together with the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA). Pochmann was one of the invited participants who joined the lecturers to speak about the importance of recreating the CNPD.
On the following day, the IBGE participated in a meeting at the Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPO) with the UNFPA and IPEA. Pochmann and Sant’Anna participated in the meeting, together with , João Villaverde, MPO’s Secretary for Institutional Affairs, who coordinated the event, besides Natália Kanen, executive director of the UNFPA, Suzana Sottoli, Regional executive director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Florbela Fernandes, representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Brazil, the president of IPEA, Luciana Servo, and their assistants.
During the meeting, Pochmann highlighted that “the IBGE is currently being modernized and has been dedicated to looking ahead”, besides highlighting the need of a review of methodology and statistics before the recent changes in methods of production, the need of modernization of national statistical offices, and the partnerships being established with UN agencies.
The president of the IBGE also highlighted the need of strengthening partnerships related to the population them: “the dialogue between the IBGE and the administration of the UN Population Fund was well-timed and strategic for the establishment of a partnership that can better consider the ongoing population transformation in Brazil and in the world.”
Roberto Sant’Anna highlighted that “the IBGE was present at these events as an institution that participates in the international cooperation process, always supported by the UNFPA and the ABC coordination, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is in charge of international cooperation, mainly South-South, in which the IBGE has engaged aiming at the connection between nations in the global south. In the context of Brazil leading G20, BRICS and approaching COP30, it is essential that this perspective of information lies on the basis of strategic decision making for the accomplishment of transforming results.”
