New IBGE publication analyzes production of health statistics

Today (3), the IBGE released the “National and International Overview of the Production of Social Indicators: Health Statistics and Related Services”, a series of texts related to health statistics, covering conceptual issues, international technical recommendations and experiences of national statistics institutes in other countries. The study, subdivided into six chapters, is aimed at public administrators from all spheres and the academic community.

The publication is the fourth volume of the series National and International Overview of the Production of Social Indicators, a methodological series whose main objective is to discuss aspects related to the production of these indicators. According to the IBGE Director os Surveys, Gustavo Junger, the publication also seeks to indicate possible directions for new advances in health statistics in the Institute's work plan.

The six chapters of the study address health in National Accounts, demographic statistics, household surveys by specific samples on the topic of health, students' health, production estimates  in services and mental health. Marco Andreazzi, one of the organizers and also responsible for the chapter on mental health, recalled the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it highlighted major social weaknesses and inequalities, reaffirming the importance of health and mental health in particular for the sustenance and development of society. “The production of official statistics needs to incorporate new dimensions and indicators. This publication aims to contribute to the identification of the best that is being produced and where development is necessary,” he comments.

The researchers emphasize the importance of the IBGE in the international community, as it makes commitments with the United Nations (UN) in the coordination of the development of in Brazil aimed at monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Clician Oliveira, another organizer of the publication, points out that health has an exclusive objective in the 2030 Agenda. “It is also important to emphasize the cross cutting nature of the theme”, she analyzes. “The theme of health, in terms of its evaluation and monitoring, relies on research and knowledge from various areas and can, for example, be related to other SDGs or identified in other bodies of the United Nations system”.

Analyst Cláudio Crespo also participated as an organizer and author of the publication. To him, these studies are essential to monitor progress and reveal the country's capacity for innovative, high-level statistical production, in line with the main international references. “At the same time, the analysis produced highlights the obstacles to data integration and research production in a country with significant social inequalities in health,” he adds.

The Overview is part of the “Studies and Analyses” series, which publishes surveys or descriptive studies based on the results of one or more personally research studies, by a single author, that express opinions and are similar in form and content to academic works. 

The topics are part of the work line of the IBGE Division of Population and Social Indicators (COPIS), and were developed by a multidisciplinary team of civil servants, with the collaboration of several divisions. To view the full content of the publication, click here.
