Chicken slaughter retreats in Q1, but slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs grow

The slaughter of chickens fell by 1.8% and that of cattle and hogs and pigs rose by 4.7% and 7.2%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, according to preliminary results from Statistics of Livestock Production, released today (May 12) by the IBGE. The complete results for the first quarter of 2022 and for the Federation Units will be released on June 8, 2022.

According to preliminary data, the number of cattle slaughtered in the quarter was 6.91 million, while the slaughter of hogs and pigs recorded 13.64 million and chicken slaughter, 1.54 billion head.

Despite the decline, the slaughter of chickens represented an increase of 0.1% compared to the last quarter last year. The slaughter of cattle also grew by 0.1% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021, while that of hogs and pigs, in the same comparison, increased by 2.0%.

In the first quarter of this year, of the total number of cattle slaughtered, the preliminary result points to a production of 1.82 million tonnes of carcasses, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2021, but a reduction of 4.5% in the compared to the last quarter of the same year.

Regarding hogs and pigs, the cumulative weight of carcasses reached 1.24 million tonnes, up 6.7% compared to the first quarter of last year and 1.8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

The weight of chicken carcasses was 3.76 million tonnes. In the annual comparison, there was an increase of 2.4%, and compared to the last quarter of 2021, the increase was 1.9%.

Egg production and milk purchases fall compared to 2021

The purchase of raw milk made by establishments that operate under municipal, state or federal health inspection was 5.88 billion liters in the first quarter of 2022, a reduction of 10.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, and a fall of 8.9% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

The production of hen eggs reached 963.82 million dozen, which corresponds to a reduction of 2.3% in the annual comparison and a decrease of 2.8% in the quarterly comparison.

The survey also shows that tanneries that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw bovine hide per year declared to have received 7.08 million whole pieces of rawhide in the first quarter this year. This amount was 0.2% lower compared to the same period in 2021 and 1.9% lower than that recorded in the last quarter of last year.
