With a widespread growth in seven out of the eight surveyed activities, the sales volume in the national retail trade grew 0.7% in September against August. This is the fifth positive sector result in a row this year, with the cumulative gain of 2.4% in the period, according the Monthly Survey of Trade, released today by the IBGE.

The biggest highs in September were in the sectors of Furniture and household appliances (5.2%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (3.3%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (1.8%) and Fuels and lubricants (1.2%).

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (0.5%), Hypermarket, supermarket, food, beverage and tobacco (0.2%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (0.2%) remained stable. The only negative rate was noticed in Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (-2.0%), after an advance of 3.8% in the previous month.

“It is worth highlighting the sales deceleration in the sector of Hypermarket, supermarket, food, beverage and tobacco (0.2%), which has been impacting positively the retail trade in the last months. The sector grows, but in a slower rhythm in September”, analyzes the survey manager, Isabella Nunes.

The indexes of retail trade were positive as much for the third quarter of 2019 (2.6%) closing, as for the cumulative in the first nine months of the year (1.3%), against the same period in the previous year. In the cumulative of the last 12 months, the indicator remained stable, changing from 1.4% in August to 1.5% in September.

Nunes highlights that the quarter closed in September is the tenth positive and records a recovery in the sales pace in relation to the first (0.3%) and the second (1%) quarters. “The numbers show a dynamic in the last months, proofing the growth in the trade activity.  There was a recovery throughout 2019 and the third quarter recorded a stronger pace in sales, spreading the increases of other activities to further than hypermarket sales”, she highlights.

Retail grows 2.1% against September last year

Comparing with September 2018, the retail trade grew 2.1%, the sixth consecutive positive rate. Nunes points out that, besides the positive results this month, it must consider the calendar effect, due to the fact that September had two more business day than the same month in 2018.

The performance was stimulated by increases in Other articles for personal and domestic use (8.5%), Furniture and household appliances (8.2%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (6.7%). The sector of Hypermarket, supermarket, food, beverages and tobacco (0.1%) decreased and recorded changes near to stability.

Fuels and lubricants (-0.5%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-1.8%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-1.3%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-15.7%) recorded negative rates.

Considering the extended retail trade, which includes, besides the retail, the activities of Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, the sales volume recorded an increase of 0.9% in comparison with August 2019, the seventh positive rate in a row, period in which the extended retail trade accumulated a gain of 4.0%. “The September 2019 result reflected, mainly, the contribution from the performance in Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (10.5%) and Construction material (5.7%), which have retail sale for enterprises.” says Nunes.

In September 2019, against September 2018, the extended retail trade recorded an advance of 4.4%, the sixth consecutive positive rate. Thereby, the extended retail trade accumulated an advance of 3.6% in the cumulative index of the year and of 4.4% in the third quarter 2019. Having changed from 3.7% up to August to 3.8% up to September, the cumulative index of the last 12 months also recorded a stability.
