The national industrial production had a positive change of 0.3% in September over August. It is the second month in a row of growth, leveraged mainly by the production of motor vehicles, with a high of 4.3%. The data are from the Monthly Survey of Industry, released today by the IBGE.

Although there was a slowdown in the upward trend in relation to August 2019 (which recorded growth of 1.2%), the change is considered positive. “We have growths in industrial production in two consecutive months, something not seen since March and April 2018. The conclusion is that those increases are focused on some few activities: 11 out of 26 activities measured by the survey. Ideally, this increase should achieve a largest number of sectors.” explains the survey manager, André Macedo.

The industrial production of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies advanced 4.3% in September, reversing, thus, the retreat of 2.4% in August.  For Mr. Macedo, this price volatility can be explained, in part, by the losses in the exports to Argentina, reflected in the August and September indexes, and the rise of the domestic demand.

The industrial production recorded a fall of 1.4 in the cumulative index of the year with the September results. “There is uncertainty in the market, with part of the families postponing consumer decisions, workers out of the job market and a decreasing demand.”, explains Mr. Macedo.

Other sectors that had a positive impact in the production were manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (6.6%), beverages (3.5%), metal products (3.7%), furniture (9.4%), computer, electronic and optical products (3.0%) and rubber and plastic products (1.4%). All these activities recorded negative rates in August.

Among the sectors that recorded reduction in September production are printing and reproduction of recorded media (-28.6%), mining and quarry industry (-1.2%), machinery and equipment (-2.8%), pharmaceutical products (-4.6%), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-0.8%) and tobacco products (-7.7%).
